About this Job: The overall function of this position is to supervise districtwide bridge maintenance projects assigned to the Districtwide Bridge Maintenance (Unit720) as well as the Districtwide Moveable Bridge (Unit 930 & 950) Operators. This position is located in District 61, Unit 500 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Bridge Engineer (Engineer7). The incumbent must be self-motivated and able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Job Duties:

  • Supervises a team of employees engaged in bridge maintenance work. Performs advanced subprofessional engineering work in supervising and planning maintenance activities for the Districtwide Bridge Unit. Provides technical assistance and guidance to subordinates. Interprets standards, methods, and procedures for inspecting, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting work activity. Provides for and conducts on-the-job and classroom employee training programs which are used to orient maintenance employees with maintenance management methods and procedures and to teach new concepts designed to improve maintenance operations by using new performance standards and operating procedures. Conducts post work inspections on major projects to determine adequacy of repairs made are in accordance with quality standards, standard work procedures and methods. Coordinates with the Public Information officer to ensure the he is up-to-date on bridge projects and movable bridge statuses to ensure the public notifications are sent as needed. Provide him with data to respond to complaints in conjunction with the Bridge Engineer.

  • Discusses planned maintenance management program, special assignments, and complaints received with the Bridge Engineer. Requisitions and schedules delivery of maintenance materials. Coordinates department-owned equipment transport and rental of outside equipment. Assists Accounting Unit with payroll and other accounting problems. Supervises and trains the Equipment Superintendent in District61. Ensures that all movable bridges are dependably manned and properly maintained/operated with the least in convenience to local vehicular and marine traffic under all operating conditions. Provides technical expertise along with the Equipment Superintendent in the training of new bridge operators in the proper procedures and methods according to the DOTD Bridge Operator Handbook and monitors the operation on a continuing basis. Supervises the routine and emergency maintenance at each movable bridge site and accounts for all associated labor, equipment, and materials. Reviews orders and inventory of the various bridge materials, office supplies, and house hold goods required at each location. Provides logistical support for all bridge operators including transporting documents, supplies, training information, and other support functions.

  • Ensures Agile reports are accurate. Tracks all preventative maintenance and tabulates all repair work completed on each movable bridge or ferry landing into a computer-based program.

  • Supervises contract maintenance projects on assigned basis including approval of contract work and submittal of payment vouchers to the District Business Office. Approves purchasing requests ensuring budget is available.

  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
