JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Traffic Signs and Markings Supervisor. This role is responsible for supervising a small crew of employees engaged in the installation, repair and replacement of signs and street markings. Incumbents plan, assign, and participate in a variety of traffic maintenance activities to ensure roads and road signs are properly marked in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other relevant laws and ordinances. Individuals in this job class are expected to exercise discretion in determining procedures when carrying out and delegating assignments from written and oral instructions from the Traffic Maintenance Supervisor. Their work is reviewed by on-site observation and inspection by supervisors for project completeness.

Birmingham - $20.46 - $31.73 USD Hourly
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver's license.
Experience setting up a work zone and flagging traffic.
Experience painting using commercial traffic painting equipment.
Experience installing traffic signs and markings according to the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
Experience reading and interpreting maps and traffic control drawings.
Experience performing pre/post trip inspections for vehicles and preventative and basic maintenance for traffic equipment (e.g., checking fuels, fluids, oil levels, striping equipment, thermoplastic machine).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Possession of a CDL Class A or B
Three years of supervisory experience in traffic maintenance.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Conducts cleanup and maintenance activities including cleaning the work truck, maintaining the sign shop, cleaning various pieces of equipment, unloading and storing materials, and reporting damaged items to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are in good working order and ready to be used again.
Ensures the safety of employees and the public by setting up worksites according to industry standard safety protocols including the use of warning lights, placement of temporary warning signs, barricade and/or cone placement, appropriate vehicle placement, communicating with crew, and the use of personal protective equipment.
Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
Completes various work orders and tasks related to the installation of traffic control devices using industry-standard appropriate procedures (i.e., MUTCD, State, Local) including taking various measurements, using tools and equipment to prepare worksites, clearing debris, and placing new traffic control devices.
Prepares for daily activities by reviewing work orders and collecting the needed supplies and equipment, loading and inspecting the work truck and/or other vehicles, using various pieces of loading equipment, and driving to the worksite in order to complete projects as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods lifting, carrying, and operating machinery. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways, construction sites, parks, etc. Work involves use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, etc. Work involves use of electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as thermoplastic machinery and painting equipment.
