The Principal Surveyor, In-Service Digital Initiatives Lead in the Digital Research team will play a pivotal role in identifying, evaluating, and implementing digital technologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of surveys and inspections. This role focuses on leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as visualization tools, remote inspection technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence, and more to drive innovation in the maritime and offshore industries.

What You Will Do:

Digital Technology Evaluation and Implementation

  • Identify and assess emerging digital technologies for their applicability in surveys and inspections.
  • Lead the adoption of technologies such as remote inspection tools, robotics, AI, and visualization platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful technology integration.

Survey and Inspection Optimization

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance survey efficiency using digital tools.
  • Leverage data and data analytics to extract actionable insights from vessel operational data.
  • Evaluate the use of technologies to reduce the need for manned entry of tanks and confined spaces.

Project Management

  • Lead cross-functional teams in planning, executing, and monitoring digital initiatives.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
  • Proactively manage risks and implement mitigation strategies.

Change Management and Training

  • Develop change management plans to facilitate the adoption of digital tools.
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for surveyors and stakeholders.
  • Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Industry Collaboration

  • Represent ABS in industry forums, conferences, and working groups.
  • Foster partnerships with technology providers, research institutions, and industry stakeholders.

What You Will Need:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Structural Civil, Mechanical, or Process Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 1015 years of experience in the maritime industry, with a focus on surveys and inspections.
  • Experience with digital technologies such as IoT, data analytics, machine learning, and remote inspection (preferred).
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering complex projects in the maritime or related industries.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of classification Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and instructions (preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise in effectively executing surveys across the various disciplines.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability with the skill to propose and convey solutions effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills and English fluency, both written and verbal, with the ability to conduct detailed technical and business communication/interaction in a professional role.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders effectively.
  • Ability to learn the the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Where allowed by local laws, a pre-employment physical examination is mandatory.
  • The role of surveyor/auditor requires sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, and both visual and auditory acuity to perform the listed duties effectively.
  • The ability to climb vertical ladders up to nine meters and navigate steep steps is essential.
  • Shall be capable of working at heights on various staging and lifting equipment.
  • Shall be able to maneuver in tight spaces and work inside confined areas for extended periods, including kneeling and crawling.
  • The role may involve exposure to industrial environments, potential injury risks, extreme weather conditions, and demanding physical activities.
  • Shall be able to lift at least 25 lbs. / 11.34 kgs.
  • The use of small tools and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with ABS safety procedures, may be required.
  • Where allowed by local laws, the surveyor will be required to successfully complete an annual physical that will recertify that the individual can perform the physical actions required.

Reporting Relationships:

  • This position reports to Manager, Technology Americas.
  • The position may have direct reports.

Schedule:

The position is located in Spring, Texas (greater Houston area with an option to work a hybrid schedule with three (3) days at the ABS Headquarters Office in Spring, Texas, and two (2) days of remote work.

Notice:

This position requires access to information that is subject to control by the Export Administration Regulations and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Any offer of employment shall be contingent upon the Companys verification that the candidate is a U.S. Person or upon the receipt of all necessary export licenses or authorizations that may be required by U.S. export control laws.
