GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under moderate supervision, perform skilled tasks in operating refuse collection equipment and engage in occasional manual labor. Train lower-level employees in the proper use of equipment.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position provides supervision for the purpose of training new Solid Waste employees on the safe operation of collection routes. Oversees cross-training as needed.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles, and other Solid Waste Services vehicles and equipment.

Pick up trash, brush, litter, bulky items, and recycling materials.

Learn and memorize routes to complete refuse collection. Read street maps and route sheets to locate route destinations.

Perform basic vehicle inspections and maintenance. Check, service, and clean equipment and maintain vehicle records.

Follow all safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions, accidents, and injuries to the supervisor.

Keep supervisor informed of unsafe or broken sanitation containers and poorly maintained collection sites.

Complete paperwork, forms, and reports related to collection services.

Dump collected trash or recyclables at designated dump sites/landfill.

Perform relief driver duties for absent drivers and crew chiefs.

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES

Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

City of Abilene collection routes and operating systems.

Operating characteristics and servicing of one or more types of refuse handling equipment.

Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.

Applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.

Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill to:

Safely maneuver complex routes and conditions.

Operate and care for a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment used in the area of work assigned.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

Learn specialized tasks from technical manuals.

Read, write, and maintain accurate records.

Speak clearly when demonstrating proper procedures, conveying policies and providing instructions.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

At least six (6) months of experience in the operation and servicing of refuse handling equipment is required.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas Class A or B Commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Bloodborne Pathogens training and HazCom training are required within sixty (60) days of employment.

Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and electrical hazards.

Ability to work overtime and work weekends.
