ABOUT THIS POSITION
Over 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2024, one of the busiest airports in the country and in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact over $44 billion annually.
The Aviation Department has a vacancy for a Pavement Maintenance Equipment Operator III position. This position is part of a 6-person heavy equipment / pavement maintenance crew at Sky Harbor Airport, Deer Valley Airport, and/or Goodyear Airport. Work requires considerable skill in operating pavement maintenance equipment, 10- and 6-yard dump trucks, water truck, backhoe, Gannon tractor, rollers, and smaller hand tools required to complete the work assigned. Constant attention to detail and safety is a crucial part of the job. This position is required to assist maintenance crews performing airfield maintenance tasks when not operating equipment. The selected candidate will need to become Movement Area certified within the one-year probationary period due to operational needs of the Airport FAA Requirements.
The Pavement Maintenance Equipment Operator III position will work Monday thru Friday, and the hours are 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Knowledge of dust control and environmentally safe practices.
- Proficiency with one or more of the following pieces of equipment: backhoe, Gannon tractor, or asphalt lay down box.
SALARY
Pay Range: $23.74 to $35.08 per hour.
Hiring Range: $23.74 to $30.31 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a departmental training course for the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
OR be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator III.
OR log 120 hours on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
OR have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment over two tons, on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
Current possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) at time of application is required.
Working conditions:
Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust; and walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience with asphalt application and maintenance.
- Experience preparing subgrades for the purpose of paving or pouring of concrete.
