About this Role

Operators at Irby Construction Company must be trained in and have completed a certified testing program which will verify the qualification of supervision and craft personnel; or must have two (2) years of substation/line construction/maintenance service applicable to the operation of equipment required for the performance of such work.

What You'll Do

  • Identify safety equipment on a specific piece of equipment.
  • Read and use the operations manual of a specific piece of equipment.
  • Perform general cleanup of equipment.
  • Identify components and controls of machine.
  • Able to perform daily, routine and periodic checks, inspections, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Learn and interpret proper hand signals
  • Perform basic operation of equipment.
  • Assist with the adjustment of brakes and clutches
  • Assist with the service and maintenance schedule of the equipment.
  • Read and use all capacity charts for the equipment.
  • Perform the setup of the equipment.
  • Perform the operation of earth moving equipment
  • Adheres to all Company Safety and Health Policies while in the course of conducting Company business.
  • Shall attend training classes as prescribed by the Training Department.
  • Works under the observation of a Supervisor to assist the Journeyman Lineman and/or other Apprentice Lineman in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric-power generation and distribution equipment, underground cables, and related facilities.
  • May be required to work on or near energized parts, but only under the direct observation of a Journeyman Lineman and/or a Journeyman Lineman Foreman.
  • Capable of operating most const. equipment booms etc. if needed.
  • May also perform the duties of a Groundman and/or other duties as needed.
  • Trustworthy and safety minded and must be conversant with all safety procedures/requirements applicable to the equipment.
  • Have the ability to spot or recognize potential danger areas and take evasive actions on his/her own initiative.
  • Must be able to identify potential danger areas and take evasive action.

The operator classification shall consist of two (2) levels which shall be divided according to operators capable of operating equipment up to 45 tons and those operators who have the capability of operating all equipment equal to or greater than 45 tons.

The operator apprenticeship levels shall be structured according to the following experience levels:

  • Operator 45 ton or larger crane
  • Operator "A" class 1 year or more experience
  • Operator "B" class 6 months to 1 year experience
  • Operator "C" class 1st 6 months experience

Must be physically qualified and have the ability to operate various types of equipment such as friction and hydraulic cranes, bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoes, compressors, trenchers, and etc.

What You'll Bring

  • May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
  • May be required to hold a valid commercial driver's license, if requested by Owner.
  • May be required to obtain light crane certification for boom trucks etc.
  • Drives and operates conveyance machinery equipped with tools and materials to job site.
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
  • May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
  • All individuals in this personnel classification must meet requirements of OSHA standard 29 CFT 1910 for the specific operated equipment.
  • Lifting and handling materials up to 60 pounds unassisted.
  • Walking and working across uneven terrain.
  • Exposure to hot and cold weather conditions
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
