Engineering Technician II
Department: Relay Protection & Controls
Summary/Objective:
System One is partnering with our client in search of an Engineering Technician II. You will play a crucial role in supporting the design and development of electrical layouts for substations, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and codes. Your contributions will be vital in fostering safe and reliable electric service through thoughtful design, technical support, and collaboration with various stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the design of substation relaying and metering systems for new installations as well as for the maintenance and redesign of existing systems.
  • Develop detailed material lists and specifications for electrical materials associated with new substations and maintenance projects.
  • Generate and review accurate drawing packages, specifications, and compliance documentation, including Sel relay logic, SCADA points lists, and communication processor configurations.
  • Support the drafting needs of the department, ensuring all documentation adheres to drafting standards.
  • Conduct on-site visits to new construction projects and existing facilities for system checkout and technical support.
Knowledge & Skills Required:
  • General Knowledge: A solid understanding of substation relaying and metering design, relay event analysis, SCADA systems point list development, system protection theory, and equipment testing methods. Familiarity with components such as protective relays, revenue meters, communication processors, and various electrical schematics.
  • Technical Proficiency: Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), AutoCAD, SEL software, and related communication processors. Ability and creativity in preparing initial drawings and materials lists.
  • Communication & Organizational Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills. High proficiency in analytical and critical thinking, with excellent organizational capabilities to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships across diverse teams, including engineers, project managers, and external vendors.
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills to manage tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Capacity to adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining a focus on quality and detail in complex projects.
Experience & Education:
  • An Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electronics Technology is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relay and metering experience. Additional relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Completion of or progress towards TVPPA Metering & Relaying courses is highly desirable.
  • Advancement to higher grade levels is contingent upon successful performance evaluations and demonstrated competency.
Equipment Utilization:
  • Proficient in using essential equipment, including workstations, AutoCAD, wide-format plotters, scanners, and office software. Some tasks may also require miscellaneous survey and measurement tools.
Position Type/Expected Work Hours:
This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work as required by project demands.
Travel:
Moderate travel is expected within local office facilities and substation sites. Occasional out-of-state travel for training and conferences may also be necessary, including overnight stays.
