About the Job

The Lead Project Engineer will drive the successful activation of complex supply chain projects. This role ensures systems are delivered on time, meet performance standards, and are ready for operational handoff. The position reports to the Director of Activation and collaborates closely with Engineering, Operations, and Vendor teams.

As a Lead Project Engineer on the Activation team, you will manage execution of installation of world-class material handling and automated systems. From initial design concepting through acceptance and turnover, you will lead internal and external engineering resources, oversee commissioning phases, and ensure cross-functional alignment across Activation, Engineering, Operations, and Vendors. You will be responsible for Project Leadership, Technical Oversight, Testing & Commissioning, and Cross-Functional Coordination

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate installation and commissioning of projects, ensuring delivery on time and on budget.
  • Oversee commissioning phases including IQA, SCADA validation, and performance testing.
  • Own the development and approval of test cases.
  • Lead defect triage and resolution in collaboration with technical leads.
  • Test and accept all in-scope project deliverables including automation and MHE systems.
  • Ensure systems meet safety, throughput, and industry standards.
  • Lead vendor activation activities including implementation schedules, design reviews, and change requests.
  • Review technical drawings, schematics, and manuals to influence and iterate on concept designs.
  • Manage project schedule, costs, and resources to meet critical milestones.
  • Provide project-level inputs to cross-functional teams and program management.
  • Develop and execute handoff strategies to Field Operations upon project completion.
  • Troubleshoot, resolve, and escalate installation issues effectively.
  • Maintain and close out project punch lists in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Collaborate across internal and external stakeholders including vendors, engineering, operations, and facilities.
  • Create and maintain installation and system acceptance testing specifications.
  • Develop internal tools and templates to assist with scheduling, budgeting, and tracking.
Qualifications
  • 7 or more years of combined experience in material handling, automation, manufacturing, supply chain and/or distribution and logistics industries.
  • Four-year degree in engineering or a four-year degree and equivalent experience.
  • Proven project management experience implementing complex capital equipment & systems.
  • Multi-year experience with project management strategies required for complex and dynamic projects with very short lead times.
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage several complex projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work independently with considerable latitude in decision making.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills across all organizational levels.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills under uncertainty.
  • Proficiency with standard project planning software applications.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% (varies by project phase).
Preferred Qualifications & Experiences
  • Familiarity with material flow methodologies.
  • Experience with industrial control systems.
  • Experience with automated material handling systems such as conveyors, sortation systems, or robotics.
  • Experience with facility layouts and construction.
  • Experience with distribution and/or logistics process flows and operations.
  • Experience with lean, six sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Project management professional (PMP) training.
  • Masters degree in engineering or MBA.

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Targets needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team members core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
