QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED. Holding a valid Journeyman or Master Plumber license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred. The candidate should have substantial experience in plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance in commercial or institutional settings, preferably in public facilities such as schools. A thorough understanding of plumbing systems, including water supply, drainage, and gas lines, as well as applicable codes and regulations, is required. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential. Additionally, the candidate must have a valid Virginia driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the ability to respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours.

DESCRIPTION

The Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and fixtures across all school facilities in the division. This includes ensuring the safe and efficient operation of water supply, drainage, and gas systems in compliance with local and state plumbing codes. The Plumber works closely with maintenance staff, school administrators, and outside contractors to ensure all plumbing-related work supports the safe and functional operation of school buildings. This position requires skilled manual work, the use of various tools and equipment, and the ability to respond quickly to urgent maintenance needs.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair pipes, fixtures, and plumbing systems including sinks, toilets, fountains, water heaters, and pumps.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing issues in school facilities and implement appropriate repairs.
  • Ensure all plumbing systems comply with current building and safety codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals related to plumbing systems.
  • Repair or replace valves, backflow preventers, drains, water lines, and sewer systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, materials used, and work completed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to minimize emergency plumbing issues.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service requests, including outside regular working hours when necessary.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other maintenance personnel for large-scale repairs or renovations.
  • Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment used in plumbing work.
  • Assist in estimating materials and labor for plumbing projects.
  • Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Support other maintenance operations as needed, including general building upkeep.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Plumber reports directly to the Manager of Maintenance. Work is performed independently or as part of a team, with oversight provided to ensure quality and compliance with applicable standards and policies.

WORK CONDITIONS

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often in tight or elevated spaces, and in varying weather conditions. The position requires physical strength and stamina, including standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting heavy materials (up to 50 pounds), and operating machinery and hand tools. Exposure to hazards such as pressurized systems, sewage, and chemicals is possible, and appropriate safety precautions must be followed at all times. The Plumber must be available for occasional after-hours emergency repairs and may need to travel between school sites using a district vehicle.
