JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of a maintenance supervisor, performs journey-level plumbing duties involved in new construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of city owned facilities. Must possess a basic understanding of all plumbing systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assembles, installs, maintains and repairs pipes, fittings, valves, heads and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and international plumbing codes.
Repairs and services city facilities plumbing using hand and power tools.
Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, water heaters, water softeners, and boilers.
Maintains pump stations and back flow preventers in an operable condition and responds to any alarms caused by equipment malfunction.
Installs, tests, and maintains systems for automatic or mode operation controls of pumps, valves, and other typical industrial equipment.
Assist as requested in performing general facilities maintenance, including, but not limited to remodeling projects; general building maintenance; storage facilities, etc; may assist in framing, painting, roofing or other skilled construction and maintenance activities related to carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
A. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
AND
B. Certificate of completion of a four year accredited apprenticeship program.
OR
C. Utah State Journeyman Plumbing License (may be substituted by six years, paid, documented, journey level field experience).
OR
D. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of large facility plumbing systems, operations and repairs; basic carpentry, advanced plumbing skills; common hand tools and power tools for maintenance, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. Must possess a full understanding of the International Plumbing Code.
Skill in the operation of various types of light equipment such as forklift, front end loader, tractor, backhoe, etc., basic mechanics, advanced electrical, HVAC and plumbing operations, basic carpentry and masonry; mathematics;
Ability to read and interpret blue prints, sketches, work orders, drawings, and diagrams as required to perform assigned tasks; to construct and design new plumbing systems; operate various equipment including hand, power tools, and plumbing specialty tools; work with numbers and measurements; work in small places; lift heavy equipment; good vision with/without corrective lens; good hand-eye coordination and motion control; lift 50 pounds; communicate verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with supervisor, subordinates, and the public; Will perform work in trenches, ceilings, on ladders, bucket lifts, scissor lifts and roofs in heights.
Special Qualifications:
Utah State Journeyman Plumbing License preferred.
A valid Utah State Commercial Driver License (CDL) preferred.
Pre-employment drug/alcohol test and background check.
BCI Background required.
Work Environment:
Incumbent of the position generally performs in a physically demanding environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving some muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Work from ladders, scaffolds, or roofs to install, maintain, or repair facilities. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; works near moving mechanical parts, vibration and risk of electrical shock, works in high, precarious places, exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and may work with chemicals such as paint, lacquer, paint thinner, and roof foam, occasionally works within enclosed spaces; talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance.
