GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs journeyman level technical work with regards to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems. Completes tasks using knowledge, skills, computer methods and technology as they relate to commercial/industrial electrical systems. Work is performed under minimal supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience and exercises independent judgment to determine the best approach by using and interpreting codes, policies and procedures.

Hiring Range: $29.30 - $37.36, depends on qualifications.

Hours of work: Monday through Thursday 7:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.; Days and hours are subject to change.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs skilled labor as a Journeyman level Commercial Electrician with general electrical duties, including but not limited to inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing various electrical systems such as HVAC, building, irrigation, street lighting, and athletic field lighting, and pumping systems.
  • Installation of new electrical systems or re-wiring of existing electrical systems.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on all control timers, street lights athletic field lighting, lightening protection, and building electrical systems.
  • Coordinates the purchasing, delivery and/or pick up of equipment and materials from outside vendors.
  • Tests generators for proper operation.
  • Responsible for the procurement and purchase of replacement and stock material related to all electrical systems.
  • Operates equipment such as power tools related to electrical work, general maintenance, and small construction equipment such as backhoes, rollers, bucket truck and tractors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) or more years of hands on experience in a commercial/industrial electrical environment; an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and / or experience may be considered. Must have a Florida Commercial Driver license (CDL), Class B. Must have a Journeyman Electrician License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Skill in the use of common hand tools and power tools
  • Skill in the use of mechanical equipment and electrical testing equipment including but not limited to amp probes, multi-tester and megger test devices
  • Skill in providing good customer service
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying climatic conditions
  • Ability to train, supervise, and provide leadership to subordinates
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and revise documents pertaining to the related trades
  • Ability to establish and maintain records on equipment and work accomplished
  • Ability to respond and stay at the workplace for extended periods of time during emergencies, as required
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to make sound decisions based upon City Code and Department policies
  • Ability to regularly work near moving mechanical parts
  • Ability to participate in the Department's mandatory emergency Callout rotation schedule

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of standing and/or walking.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
