Working Foreman Water Distribution

Under general supervision of the Water & Sewer Superintendent and General Foreman, provide direction to work crews on assigned job locations; perform skilled manual work in the repair, maintenance and installation of Town water distribution and sewer collection systems; perform all other related duties following established methods and procedures.

-In consultation with supervisors, implement daily work schedules for assigned staff.

  • Responsible for organizing and assisting in installing and repairing water mains, water services, sewer mains, hydrants, valves and meters and appurtenances; direct the work in activities such as excavating trenches; locate valves and shutoffs and breaks in water and sewer mains.
  • Inspect material, equipment and supplies; schedule inspections and routine operating procedures in the cleaning and repairing of the sanitary sewer and water distribution systems.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Operate required motor equipment in the performance of the tasks assigned.

Other Duties

  • Maintain established quality and quantity standards. Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions to supervisor. Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational and safe condition.
  • Maintain records of work performed.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques relative to public works maintenance.
  • Skill in operating construction equipment.
  • Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to direct others in the performance of their duties.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively interact and deal with other Town employees and the general public.
  • Possession of Class 2 license.

Education and Experience

Duties require High School diploma; five years experience in water delivery and sewer collection, maintenance, and repair; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid CDL Class B, Hoisting License Class 3 and Massachusetts Water Distribution Class III licenses are prerequisites.

Please note: Drug and Alcohol screening is a condition of employment.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises 5-10 division staff members and private contractors as required.

Physical Elements

Frequent and extended periods of outside work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.

Continuous walking, standing and/or climbing; frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions.

Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring ability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques.

Position may require overtime.
