Wartsila's Energy Business is looking for a Mechanical Engineer - Thermal management for the Energy Storage Business. The role will be part of the hardware engineering team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

Preferred location for this position is Wartsila's location in Scarborough, ON (Toronto Area). The selected candidate will be required to work onsite.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize battery module and power electronics thermal management systems designs to meet specific requirements, such as energy density, power output, thermal management, and safety.
  • Support the design and development of mechanical, electrical, and thermal components cooling systems, enclosures, and electrical power buswork. Perform thermal load calculations and size and select cooling system components accordingly
  • Collaborate with battery module and cooling component (chillers) and fluid handling (piping) component suppliers to ensure compatibility and integration in system design.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to develop and optimize assembly processes, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Support the transition from prototype to mass production, including pilot builds / testing and manufacturing ramp-up activities.
  • Manage suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget.
  • Develop various battery system thermal control test experiments, document procedures, and perform the tests in lab and shop environments.
  • Design piping systems, mounting, enclosures, racks, and other features as necessary.
  • Develop and document test procedures, assembly and installation instructions, and other document and system documentation.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and development programs.
  • Support manufacturing and system deployment activities by collaborating to resolve issues and ensure products and systems are delivered to specification.

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:

  • BS Required, MS degree desired
  • 3-5 years or more of product/project development and mechanical engineering experience, HVAC industry experience (liquid cooling equipment, piping, controls) and hands-on practical is especially valuable Experience with flow calculations and thermal load calculations is critical. Ansys/Fluent is a plus, PTC Creo/Windchill is a plus
  • Experience with energy storage systems is valuable
  • Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Experience solving customer's needs and issues
  • History of maintaining positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Team player attitude internally and externally
  • Entrepreneurial drive with hunter mind-set
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of the time
