This position will report to the Division Traffic Engineer in Division 10. The Senior Assistant Division Traffic Engineer is responsible for review of engineering studies, including traffic impact analysis (TIA) review. Engineer shall perform duties to include planning, organizing, training, and other work duties as needed. Engineer shall send/respond to email, answer Contact Us program and review plans for pavement markings, signage, traffic control, etc. Engineer shall maintain records and reports on all evaluations done. Engineer shall have the knowledge and ability to interpret/review TIA's. Engineer shall receive requests/complaints from the general public, contractors and other departments. Engineer must have the ability and knowledge to investigate the complaints and suggest/implement corrective actions. Many decisions can reflect the dangers/safety of the traveling public. Engineer is responsible for maintaining, updating, and implementing signal timing changes for isolated and coordinated traffic signals.
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Working knowledge of transportation engineering and civil engineering principles and practices
- Experience in transportation analysis and transportation investigation techniques
- Demonstrated ability explaining engineering concepts and related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner, both verbally and in writing, for a variety of audiences
- Experience prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and organizing work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to read, review and interpret engineering plans and make traffic engineering operations and safety recommendations
Additional Expectations:
Employee must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Traffic Engineering, including highway construction and maintenance methods and techniques. Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing with DOT staff and employees, Governmental Officials, Private Engineers and Developers, and the general public. Experience with personnel management is preferred. Must have the ability to operate computer using Microsoft and SAP applications. Will be required to operate a state motor vehicle. Employee will be subject to outside environmental conditions, noise and traffic hazards and will be required to traverse difficult and steep terrain.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
