The Building Inspector I performs technical building and life safety inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects to verify compliance with adopted codes, standards, and municipal ordinances for the Building Codes Division. This position is part of a three-level career progression, including Building Inspector I, II, and III.
Key Responsibilities
Inspects industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations; inspects plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and structural installations, as well as a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements; provides a detailed list of deficiencies and ensures their correction at subsequent inspections.
Examines plans and specifications for construction projects as required to perform inspections; relays technical information and direction to owners, applicants, contractors, and staff in a manner tailored to each audiences understanding; receives and responds to questions and concerns from the public, contractors, and businesses both in the field and within the office, maintaining a professional manner.
Analyzes information, develops logical conclusions, and makes recommendations within the framework of established policies and procedures; implements enforcement actions to correct violations under the direction of the Building Official.
Maintains acceptable project documentation and filing practices, utilizing computer and iPad based permitting and mobile inspection applications; coordinates with other departments on the issuance of certifications of occupancy.
Qualifications
Experience: At least one year of building construction or inspection experience is preferred.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Preferred candidates will possess specialized training in building trades, code enforcement, or a related field.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid drivers license and favorable driving record are required.
