Equipment Operator III - Lift Stations

This position is under the general guidance and direction of the Director of Public Works. This is a skilled position requiring the operation of moderate/heavy-level construction-style equipment. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks as well as equipment operation. On specific assignments, team members are supervised but may be required to work independently. Direction is provided by leadership with some independent judgment required.

This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

  • Operation of the high-pressure sewer cleaner truck.
  • Daily operation of dump truck, front-end loader/backhoe, high-pressure/sewer cleaner truck, excavator, crane truck, TV truck and other mobile equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures and precautions.
  • Maintains professional, team-focused and courteous communication with internal and external customers.
  • Drive a vehicle and/or equipment to various locations to complete tasks necessary for the maintenance and/or repair of lift stations.
  • Operate equipment and represent the City courteously and professionally while engaging with the general public, other departments, team members and leaders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the effective operations and maintenance of small, medium and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents.
  • Knowledge of the hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment and the safety precautions to be taken.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general written and oral instructions relating to construction and maintenance operations.
  • Strong skills in the operation and general maintenance of varying types of construction-style equipment.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions, including but not limited to shoveling, carrying and lifting.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, courteous and effective working relationships with other departments, fellow team members, vendors, contractors and the general public.
  • Exceptional driving skills, including the desire and ability to follow all rules of the road and courteous defensive driving tactics.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • CDL Class B License w/ air brakes endorsement.
  • Three (3) years experience in the operation and routine maintenance of small, medium and heavy equipment.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Summary:

  • Occasionally - Lift/Carry: 50+ lbs., Push/Pull: 25+ lbs., Crawling.
  • Frequently - Lift/Carry: 10-50 lbs., Push/Pull: 10-25 lbs., Bend, Squat/Kneel, Twist/Turn, Reach Outward, Stand, Climb, Reach Above Shoulder.
  • Consistently - Lift/Carry: 10 lbs. or less, Push/Pull: 10 lbs. or less, Handling/Fine Motor Skills, Sit, Walk, Type/Keyboard, Drive.

Risk/Safety Conditions:

  • This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (i.e., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment).
  • Outdoor year-round work as related to the maintenance, repair and construction of City buildings and structures.

Work Environment:

  • Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, strong odors, or dust).
