This recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position.

The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a department promotional certification to fill a Maintenance Supervisor position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position . This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.
As the Maintenance Supervisor, you will supervise staff engaged in the maintenance of Sonoma County's public works, including road construction, maintenance projects, and drainage projects . Additional responsibilities will include:
  • Assigning and evaluating the work of staff performing road maintenance activities, pothole patching, vegetation removal, and drainage maintenance
  • Resolving daily operational challenges
  • Prioritizing projects, which also includes preparing estimates, scheduling labor, and ordering materials
  • Creating and implementing occupational and safety programs
  • Maintaining records and preparing operational activity reports
  • Gathering data and making recommendations on materials and equipment budgets
  • Responding to written, phone, and electronic inquiries
  • Training staff in preventative maintenance, pre-trip inspections, troubleshooting, and routine repairs

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following:
  • Lead experience performing both semi-skilled and skilled Public Works road maintenance tasks, as well as supervising a team
  • Generalist maintenance experience ranging from working in different types of construction environments
  • Experience with job site construction and project safety
  • Experience researching and finding resources to resolve maintenance issues
  • The ability to read and interpret plans, estimate job costs, and order necessary materials
  • Experience planning, organizing, and prioritizing work within set deadlines
  • The ability to use computer systems to write reports, enter data, and track information
  • The following certifications are desired, not required:
    • Forklift Certification
    • Trench Safety Training
    • Aerial Lift Certification

Note: A valid Commercial Drivers License (Class A CDL) with a minimum of a Tanker endorsement is required for this position.

Experience and Education: Four years of recent experience performing public works or road maintenance work, including one year of experience in a lead capacity.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position. Considerable knowledge of: methods, materials, machines, tools and equipment used in public works and road construction and maintenance projects; the occupational hazards and modern safety practices in maintenance and construction work; preventive maintenance requirements and standards for vehicles, light and heavy equipment, machines, and power and hand tools; effective methods of supervising and training maintenance personnel.

Ability to: make estimates and to interpret and work illustrative plans, sketches and grade stakes; set grades and alignments; supervise and evaluate the work of unskilled, semi skilled and skilled maintenance employees; establish and maintain harmonious relationships with employees, the public and other agencies; inspect maintenance or construction work performed to established specifications; maintain records and prepare reports; demonstrate physical strength, endurance and mechanical aptitude; read and write English at a level appropriate for successful job performance; utilize electronic information systems and analyze and interpret information; and perform basic mathematical calculations.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

An Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) may be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.

Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.

A background investigation may be required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation.
