Position: Pit Supervisor - Quarry
The Pit Supervisor supports the Plant Manager in overseeing production operations to maximize efficiency and minimize operating costs. This role plays a key part in maintaining a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with company safety policies, MSHA, and other applicable regulations. The Pit Supervisor is responsible for supervising hourly production, contractors, maintenance personnel, directing daily activities, and providing leadership in areas such as safety, quality control, plant efficiency, and preventative maintenance of equipment and facilities.
What you will do :
- Actively promote a safety-first culture by prioritizing health and safety in the plant. Understand, exhibit and remain in compliance with all Company and regulatory health and safety policies/regulations.
- Plan and schedule daily production schedules to maximize productivity and optimize the utilization of employees, resources, and equipment for the pit. Take full responsibility for site planning and pit development to support long-term operational goals.
- Oversee production and quality control processes in the pit.
- Provide effective leadership, coaching, training, and supervision to employees. Lead positively through team building and ongoing development. Coordinate with Plant Manager on staffing, performance and disciplinary actions, and employee recognition.
- Report daily production and track KPIs of pit performance.
- Ensure raw material production meets quality control standards.
- Promote safe work habits and provide safe working conditions.
- Exhibit and enforce safety and company policies. Ensure PPE is used as required.
- Effectively communicate daily tasks to the pit team, assign tasks accordingly
- Evaluate employee performance and work with Plant Manager to effect coaching/corrective action as required.
- Conduct a workplace exam of work area daily and inform employees of safety hazards found. Ensure safety hazards are effectively abated in a timely manner.
- Manage the operation of the pit and stripping areas, pit and primary equipment repair and maintenance. Ensure equipment in inspected daily and maintained to operate at peek efficiency to minimize production interruptions.
- Ensure production levels are at an optimum with a minimum of downtime and mobile equipment is operated correctly in collaboration/coordination with plant mobile maintenance team.
- Provide an example of good leadership.
- Ensure operating area works within a defined budget and manages costs within set guidelines.
- Work with Plant Management to generate operating and project budgets for the operating area.
- Work with management for ongoing pit development plans, ensure implementation of plans.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you will need:
- 5+ years working knowledge of quarry production, pit fleet optimization, drilling, blasting, equipment, and processes with at least two years in a supervisory role.
- Mining engineering experience a plus
- Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Priority emphasis and strong time-management skills
- Analytical abilities and comfort with using data and objective information for making decisions.
- Able to work weekends when required.
- Knowledge in software systems in Carlson Command, CMMS Computerized Maintenance Management System (Maintenance Tracking/Workorders) preferred.
- Knowledge/experience with using drone and site management software such as Propeller a plus.
- Understand elevations, grading ratios, water management in the pit, berm development, catch benches, highwall safety, muck pile management and loading efficiencies for loaders and excavators location of spoil pile to allow maximum room.
- Strong understanding of mining equipment, pit operations, and safety management systems
- Proven ability to lead and motivate teams, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety with a track record of maintaining high safety standards.
- Ability to work in variable terrain and environmental conditions, with a focus on problem-solving and decision making under pressure.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including extended shifts in a mining environment.
