Summary Statement Primary duty will be to assist with Statewide Bridge Safety Inspections. Roughly 90% of time will be spent in field inspecting various types of bridges. Secondary duties may include assisting with the Dam Inspection Program and Bridge Maintenance Program activities. A CDL Cass B license is required to be obtained within the first year of hire. Also, you will be required to attend and successfully pass the NHI Two-Week Comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Course (course will be paid for by the Department). • Inspects infrastructures to ensure compliance with design plans, materials specifications, safety requirements, construction processes, local, state and federal codes and on going maintenance requirements; documents/reports compliance or deficiencies.
• Designs/develops/reviews engineering project/site layouts, alignments, profiles, studies, graphs and other related activities.
• Compiles and records notes, sketches, test results, inspection data and other information to document compliance and/or develop designs, specifications, reports, maps and other geographically based data.
• Conducts various studies to be used by others to analyze needs/develop plans, record characteristics and other related activities.
• Conducts data analysis to determine accuracy of data collected, develop recommendations, develop corrective designs and/or ensure compliance.
• Tests/evaluates the quality of materials or designs to verify adherence to contracts and specifications.
• Obtains survey data, such as angles, elevations, points, and contours, using electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
• Calculates/measures area and volume dimensions, horizontal and vertical geometry, profile and component specifications, and material testing dimensions using calculators or computers.
• Operates computer assisted drafting equipment or other tools of the trade.
• Reads and interprets plans, specification, blueprints and other engineering documents.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Engineering/Planning/Surveying Technician I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Bridge Management; Construction Inspection; Construction Estimating:

1. Knowledge of applied mathematical computations.
2. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
DelDOT Medical Exam: Applicants who meet the job requirements for the position, and who are made a conditional offer of employment, shall be required to meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to hold a commercial drivers license unless they are approved for either an Intra-State CDL Waiver of a Federal Waiver or Exemption. In addition, applicants must not have incurred four or more serious traffic violations during the previous three years as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Code.
