A day in the life

Prologis is seeking an ambitious and passionate Utility Scale Engineering Development Manager (Solar and Storage) to lead engineering efforts and support all phases of project development of its grid scale storage portfolio in the US. Prologis Energy team has multiple GWs of pipeline for solar and battery energy storage systems across North America and several projects coming online in near future. This role will work closely with our development and execution teams to bring projects from conception to commercial operations.

This position offers an unparalleled ability to build one of the largest portfolios of Solar and Utility scale BESS assets globally.

Key responsibilities include:

Engineering Leadership & Project Development

  • Serve as the technical lead for utility-scale energy storage projects during early-stage development, supporting site selection, feasibility, and system optimization.
  • Perform and review conceptual engineering, including site layouts (5%, 10%, 30% design stages), SLDs, and equipment configurations for PV + BESS and standalone BESS systems.
  • Assess project viability by evaluating electrical interconnection requirements, land use constraints, floodplain impacts, zoning, and permitting factors. Coordinate with Development and Real Estate Teams to ensure site viability from both Civil and Electrical perspectives. Visits sites as needed during pre-construction phase and drive/support 30% CD Packages.
  • Develop and manage interconnection strategies across a portfolio of energy storage projects (standalone or hybrid). Analyze grid conditions, queue backlogs, and interconnection opportunities at ISO/RTO and utility levels.
  • Lead or support field assessments during pre-construction to validate design assumptions and site constructability.

Design Management & Technical Execution

  • Oversee internal and external engineering efforts across major project milestones-design, interconnection, permitting, procurement, commissioning, and O&M transition.
  • Ability to perform, generate and review high level electrical SLD and site layouts as needed for PV+BESS and Utility scale BESS solutions
  • Ensure engineering deliverables (SLDs, communication and control diagrams, protection studies, equipment specs) meet quality, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and submit interconnection applications (e.g., CAISO, PJM, MISO, ERCOT, utility programs). Coordinate technical studies (Feasibility, System Impact, Facilities Studies) with consultants and transmission providers.
  • Review contractor and EPC designs; provide construction phase engineering support as needed.
  • In depth knowledge of MV Electrical systems, ampacity calcs, short circuit/load flow, protective device coordination, Arc flash and other electrical topics.
  • Manage technical scope for FAT/SAT testing, BESS commissioning, and interconnection compliance.

Technology Evaluation & Procurement

  • Collaborate with procurement to define technical requirements and support vendor selection for major equipment (MV switchgear, transformers, PCS, controls).
  • Evaluate BESS technologies and OEM offerings, including factors such as augmentation strategy, RTE, BOL, availability, and long-term performance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Standards

  • Partner with Development, Legal, Real Estate, and Permitting teams to ensure project success.
  • Represent Prologis in interactions with utilities, ISOs (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.), AHJs, and permitting agencies.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical standards, templates, and best practices for utility-scale energy systems.
  • Support commercial teams with grid-related diligence for M&A, PPA, and offtake agreements.
  • Lead cost optimization efforts through value engineering and design innovation.

Building blocks for success

Required:

  • 5+ years of senior-level experience in engineering, technical project management, or sales engineering within PV and/or utility-scale BESS environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and ability to develop and review system-level designs, including MV electrical layouts and protection schemes.
  • Deep knowledge of electrical power systems: ampacity calculations, short circuit and load flow analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash, etc.
  • Strong familiarity with interconnection processes, power purchase agreements, clean energy incentive programs and regulatory environments in CAISO, ERCOT, and other ISOs.
  • Proven ability to manage external engineering consultants, EPCs, and contractors across all project phases.
  • Strong understanding of system design economics, permitting workflows, and grid integration requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, solutions-driven mindset.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Power Systems or Renewables.
  • Master's degree
  • Professional Engineer license

Hiring Salary Range of: $122,000 - $185,000. Salary and whole compensation package (bonus target) to be determined by the candidate's location, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
