You will be responsible for performing all kinds of journeyman ship fitting and fabricating tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels including miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include:

  • Identifying different types of metals and alloys and also determine thickness and proper grade.
  • Developing templates, layout, and fabricates sub assemblies to include but not limited to shell plates, frames, water tight and non-watertight bulkheads, deck beams, superstructures, foundations, ladders, pipe rails, rudders, cradles and many other items.
  • Using a plasma arc and oxy-acetylene torch for burning, flushing, and heating material.
  • Using lifting eyes, chain falls, overhead cranes, slings, chains and other lifting gear to move material or regulate it on the job.
  • Performing some journeyman tack-welding tasks in the 3F and 4F positions to include but not limited to common welding practices using shielded metal arc welding(SMAW), flux core arc welding(FCAW), and gas metal arc welding(GMAW) equipment.
