Summary: The Roadway Supervisor oversees all aspects of Roadway Maintenance and Incident Response. This includes input on work assignments, equipment, materials, scheduling, and leading regular safety meetings. They identify and plan repairs for roadway elements that do not meet performance standards. The Roadway Supervisor reports directly to the Roadway Maintenance Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily Roadway Maintenance and Incident Response crew activities for accuracy, completion, and safety.
- Supervise crews during snow removal and ice control operations.
- Record daily work orders and accident forms in electronic maintenance management systems.
- Coordinate schedules with Roadway Maintenance, Incident Response teams, and sub-contractors.
- Delegate work assignments to ensure timely completion.
- Train teams on safety procedures for roadwork, incident response and equipment use.
- Ensure adherence to I-66 guidelines and safety protocols.
- Mentor and train junior technicians and leads.
- Be available on-call 24/7 to respond to and manage incidents and emergencies.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Schedule and supervise facility and vehicle maintenance.

Education, Experience & Certification:
- 4-7+ years of supervisory experience in roadway maintenance or construction with traffic control, demonstrating leadership and team management
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; some college education or an associates degree is preferred, reflecting a commitment to further education
- Specific expertise in best practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in Roadway Maintenance and Incident Response, ensuring effective supervision and decision-making
- VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certification, showing proficiency in managing work zones
- VDOT Guard Rail Installation Training, emphasizing safety and compliance knowledge
- Valid Drivers License: CDL is not required but the potential to obtain one is required, indicating flexibility and readiness to meet job demands
- First Aid and CPR training, or the ability to obtain such within 15 days of employment, highlighting readiness to handle emergencies
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach with special emphasis on Hazard Communication, or the ability to obtain such within 15 days of employment, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
Professional Qualities:
- Supervise, manage, and delegate tasks to a team of 8-14 members for Roadway Maintenance and Incident Response
- Effectively manage tasks and meet deadlines
- Foster positive interactions with team members
- Exhibit strong multitasking and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment
Computer Skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other PC software
- Knowledgeable in Maintenance Management Information Systems
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Moderate to high noise levels due to heavy machinery
- Occasional roadway travel required
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs independently
- Frequently stand, walk, drive, and sit for extended periods.
