Sr. Electrical Engineer (Senior Professional Engineer/Architect)

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

This recruitment will establish an Open eligible list that will be used to fill current and future Senior Professional Engineer/Architect positions. The eligible list established may also be used to fill position in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

THE DEPARTMENT

OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) is an organization dedicated to providing waste management services, protecting the environment, and promoting resource recovery to preserve the life of our landfills and ensure a safe and healthy community for current and future generations. OCWR operates three active regional landfills (North, Central, South), four household hazardous waste collection centers, material recovery (metal, mattresses, green waste), three compost facilities, monitors 20 closed landfills, and administers municipal solid waste collection, recycling, and planning for County unincorporated areas. OCWR is a nationally renowned waste management department responsible for a network of sanitary landfills and is committed to its exceptional record of regulatory compliance and excellence.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Sr. Electrical Engineer will manage all electrical engineering projects and tasks within the Renewable Energy Technology Planning and Engineering (RETEP) unit. The duties in this position include technical support on various electrical engineering aspects associated with solid waste disposal sites owned and operated by the County of Orange. The Sr. Electrical Engineer will provide engineering support on electrical and process data collection, inspections, and preparing and review of technical documents, plans, and specifications. Additionally, this position will perform various electrical engineering tasks to monitor closed and active solid waste disposal sites while providing quality assurance of work submitted by design consultants, engineering field staff, and contractors. This position will also assist in the preparation of electrical engineering studies, design documents, and construction packages to support various projects in a timely manner; interact with internal and external stakeholders to help OCWR with its electrical system reliability, plan, organize, implement, and support various programs such as: County wide arc flash program, electrical infrastructure engineering standardization, Smart Landfill Program Development and Management, Renewable Energy Generation development at all Regions, and landfill automation system.

Job duties include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Power systems management (12KV down to 120 Volt level)
  • Electrical power distribution, protection, and line safety
  • Development, design, and management of industrial electrical engineering documents
    • Single line diagrams (SLD)
    • Electrical wiring diagrams
    • Electrical site plans
    • Electrical room layouts and elevations
    • Switchgear, switchboard, Motor Control Centers (MCC)
    • Motor elementary diagrams
    • Cable and conduit schedules
  • Ability to evaluate field electrical equipment to help design, develop, update, and manage all electrical drawings and specifications (and bring all existing documents to as-built status)
  • Preventive and predictive maintenance of electrical equipment based on National Fire protection Association (NFPA) 70B
  • Electric power energy strategies and master plans from high to medium voltage
  • Manage the County single line diagram engineering drawings data base
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will have a valid Professional Electrical Engineer license issued by California's Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Geologists, and Geophysicists. The ideal candidate will also possess five (5) years of post-licensure experience related to assignment. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess supervisory level experience that demonstrates strong knowledge and expertise in the following core competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering and/or electrical design project management
  • Ability to research and implement advanced electrical engineering technology
  • Ability to ensure industry design standards.
  • Knowledge of power distribution and protection based on NFPA 70E
  • Knowledge of power generation methods and power plants based on NFPA 110

REQUIRED LICENSES
Possession of a California Class C Driver License is required.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
