Summary

Under general supervision of the Parks Supervisor, with daily direction from the Crew Leader, the Equipment Operator is a more advanced maintenance position responsible for operating a variety of light-medium construction equipment, and specialized landscaping equipment in the maintenance of parks, athletic fields, facilities, medians and right-of-way areas. An elevated knowledge, skill and application of turf management techniques and equipment operation is required. Participates and specializes in turf and athletic field maintenance and preparation.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

  • Operates a variety of heavier and more specialized equipment when performing maintenance and repairs for parks, athletic field complexes, municipal properties, medians and right-of-way areas.
  • Performs variety of landscaping functions to include mowing, aeration, top-dressing, sod replacement, pesticide and fertilizer application, edging, weeding, and other miscellaneous landscaping responsibilities.
  • Performs specialized maintenance for the care and preparation of athletic fields including pitching mounds, batter's box, infields, field layout, field painting and chalk, etc.
  • Hauls and operates equipment to and from assigned worksites.
  • Collects and hauls tree limbs and other landscape debris to area landfills.
  • Conducts safety and maintenance inspections of vehicles, equipment, and park properties and wears protective and safety gear as indicated for the work assignment.
  • Inspects work in progress and at completion for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, plans and specifications and standards of quality and safety.
  • Prepares, gathers and transports tools, materials, supplies and equipment necessary to complete work assignments.
  • Assists Crew Leaders and other crew members to complete work orders in a safe and timely manner.
  • Cleans and repairs work site upon completion of construction, and repair projects.

Other Important Duties:

  • May be required to assists in the setup, teardown, and cleanup for special events and meetings.
  • May occasionally be required to work on-call, evenings or weekends.
  • Travels to attend meetings and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques for a variety of light-medium construction and specialized landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of turf management techniques and athletic field maintenance and preparations.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations, practices and procedures for area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in following oral and written directions related to area of assignment.
  • Skill in planning and organizing materials, supplies and equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Skill in effectively providing assistance and instruction to work crews.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., and one (1) year heavy and light equipment operation and construction or maintenance experience in assigned area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility test, criminal background check and MVR check.

Environmental Factors & Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed outdoors at work site and construction environments.
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, trenches, hazardous chemicals, fumes, air and water borne pathogens.
  • Balancing - maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.

  • Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

Work Environment:

  • Work performed is primarily heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:

  • Equipment utilized includes light-medium construction and specialized landscaping equipment including reel mowers, tractors, skid steer loaders, infield groomers, trenchers and front end loaders. Other equipment may include back hoes, dump trucks, trailers and department vehicles, hand and power tools.
