Engineering Technician I - Div. 13 Roadside Environmental

This posting will fill three (3) positions - 60023175, 60023265, and 60023235 (this position is an anticipated vacancy). You only need to apply once to be considered for all 3 positions.

These positions will report to Division 13 Roadside Environmental Unit. Responsibilities for this position include inspection of contract grass mowing, long arm slope mowing, littler removal, and other roadside maintenance operations throughout the various counties within the division and/or the position will serve as the inspector for all contractual operation at the Division Rest Areas and Welcome centers, including janitorial services, grounds maintenance, and facility maintenance and renovations. Employee will be required to work with the contractor and their staff to ensure proper operation 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 52 weeks/year that includes night and weekend inspections and emergency closures due to hazardous spills, accidents, snow and ice, etc. Position will assist with winter weather operations in the division.

There may be times when this position must also work in other capacities within the Roadside Environmental Unit, and they will be expected to complete any other duty assigned by the supervisor. Work in this position will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Management prefers the following:

  • Experience in vegetation management such as grass mowing, guardrail trimming, tree removal and plant bed maintenance
  • Experience in conducting inspections for compliance with contact agreements, standards/codes, and specifications.
  • Experience in maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Experience reading highway and/or landscape construction plans
  • Experience using MS Word and Excel

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes and specifications. Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in inspection of various contracts including rest area facility renovation and maintenance, janitorial services, grounds maintenance, and various other maintenance operations. General knowledge of state and/or federal rules and regulations to determine compliance. General knowledge and skill in the use of equipment and software used for inspection. Ability to maintain standard records both physically and electronically. Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routine or simple technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized manner. Night and weekend work assignments are possible. Snow and ice operations and emergency response are required. May be required to verbally communicate with the general public. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Safety toes shoes required.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
