Survey Crew Chief / Utility Locator
Location: Denver, CO or College Station, TX | Travel Required | Remote Field Work
David Evans and Associates, Inc. (DEA) is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Survey Crew Chief/Utility Locator to join our growing Surveying and Geomatics team, either in Denver, Colorado or College Station, Texas. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting DEA's work on large-scale energy and transportation infrastructure projects across the region.

This role supports field crews performing boundary, topographic, and right-of-way surveys with an emphasis on subsurface utility investigations and data collection for both public and private clients.
Position Description
Collaborate with engineers, surveyors, project managers, and utility owners to locate and resolve subsurface utility conflicts using EMI locators, GPR, GPS, conventional surveying methods, and vacuum excavation
Review and interpret utility records, as-built drawings, civil engineering plans, roadway layouts, and ROW maps to identify utility type, ownership, size, connections, and alignments
Prepare base CAD drawings and detailed plan/profile exhibits from survey data; enter, update, and maintain GIS database records
Execute Quality Level B utility designating and Quality Level A test holes-safely expose utilities, document findings, restore pavement, and record all test-hole details
Manage One-Call notifications, request utility records, and coordinate directly with utility owners and third-party locators
Record precise field data in field books-sketch utility locations, log pole and test-hole information, and track One-Call ticket statuses
Operate and maintain locating and survey equipment (multi- and single-frequency locators, GPR units, jackhammers, concrete saws, air/water lances); perform calibrations and minor repairs
Operate and service field vehicles (truck, UTV, trailer) to ensure all tools, vehicles, and equipment is cleaned, maintained, and stored per company procedures
Coordinate with survey and CAD teams to integrate field data into final deliverables, then perform QA/QC reviews of linework, drawings, and reports
Serve as David Evans and Associates, Inc. on-site representative-liaise with clients, project managers, engineers, and utility contacts to communicate progress and potential issues
Oversee traffic control setups, lead tailgate safety briefings, and develop site-specific health and safety checklists
Train and mentor junior crew members, promoting technical skill development in equipment use, design techniques, and documentation standards
Ensure all field operations align with DEA's commitment to safety and quality
Position Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years' field experience in land surveying
- Working knowledge of line locating theory and ASCE38-22 standards
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- Willingness to travel for projects (up to 1-2 weeks at a time)
- Comfortable working independently and in remote, rugged environments
- Able to lift and carry 50 pounds
Preferred Qualifications:
- L.S.I.T (Land Surveyor in Training) certification
- Experience using Trimble Business Center software
- CAD/GIS experience (Civil 3D, Microstation, ArcGIS), particularly related to surevey datat processing and deliverables
