EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Pay Range: $23.40 - $32.93
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in the operation of one or more types of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment and trucks.
Work also involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of motorized equipment such as front-end loaders, graders, rollers, plows, trucks, and other types of equipment of comparable operating difficulty. Work requires, as a primary factor, the operation of motorized equipment where such operation constitutes the primary purpose of employment. Work is performed with considerable independence under general supervision and is reviewed for results obtained. Supervision is received from an administrative superior.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Leads a crew when assigned, and operates medium and heavy equipment including motor grader, roller, snowplow, dump trucks, and front-end loaders.
- Operates street sweepers, backhoes, mowers, and similar equipment in maintenance and repair of streets, storm drainage and public works facilities.
- Instructs and trains new employees in safe operation of equipment.
- Plows and sands streets in snow removal and ice controls.
- Seals, paves and patches streets; forms and pours concrete.
- Overhaul street signage - repair or replace posts, signs and barricades. Operates the computerized sign machine.
- Cleans storm sewers and catch basins; mows weeds; cleans ditches and drain ways.
- Makes routine and minor adjustment to equipment; washes, lubricates, adjusts and performs minor repair.
- May supervise maintenance personnel of a lower classification; when not actually engaged in equipment operation, performs a variety of maintenance tasks; completes operating and time reports.
- Operates a trucked mounted traffic paint machine and walk behind painter; paints traffic and parking markings.
- Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of medium and heavy-duty public works motorized equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards of equipment operation and of appropriate safety precautions.
- Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
- Skill in the operation of light and heavy trucks, including other automotive equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or equivalent GED, supplemented by some experience with the operation of street related equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities, and skills.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle.
- When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment
