About the Position
Performs routine maintenance services and tire repair/replacement to light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment (e.g., tandem trucks, loaders, dozers, motor graders, lay down (paving) machines, mowers, etc.). Maintenance services will include various system, such as engine/transmissions, cooling, brake, fuel, and hydraulic. Under the guidance of the shop foreman and Heavy Equipment Mechanic IIIs, this position assists with specialized mechanic repairs, and rebuilds, maintains, modifies, and installs special systems on a variety of types of heavy and/or comparable specialized equipment. Performs maintenance on various small engines, pumps and hand tools. Ensures the equipments safe and productive operation, both in the shop and in the field under potentially adverse weather conditions.
Major duties and responsibilities include , but are not limited to:
- Perform routine preventative maintenance services per CDOT policies and procedures, including oil changes, servicing transmissions, servicing differentials, etc.;
- Perform DOT/CDOT inspections on equipment;
- Perform minor repairs during maintenance services or inspections, such as wipers, lights, fastening loose hoses and wiring, etc.;
- Perform on-site flat tire repairs on various trucks, including tandem axle trucks, single axle trucks, and 1-ton trucks;
- Perform roadside tire repair/replacement;
- Replace worn out tires with new tires;
- Install special equipment such as warning lights, radios, AVL hardware, and safety equipment;
- Route electrical wiring related to the removal and installation of devices;
- Install reflective tape on truck boxes and equipment when either new or repainted;
- Decommission vehicles and equipment by removing aftermarket equipment, decals, and other identifying markings;
- Order and procure filters, supplies, and materials for preventative maintenance services;
- Complete documentation on all units, track equipment maintenance, and keep federal DOT inspection records;
- Create, prepare, review, and edit work orders in the SAP system;
- Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills;
- Learn to diagnose and repair a variety of heavy equipment systems;
- Learn to fabricate, machine, and weld special-use parts and accessories;
- Instruct operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment;
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment through cleaning and ensuring proper storage and disposal of waste;
- Follow all safety procedures, wear appropriate safety equipment, and report any safety concerns;
- Respond to emergencies and travel to remote locations in adverse weather and road conditions to perform mechanical repairs on CDOT equipment;
- Use computers with various software applications for data input, records management, and e-mail in support of job assignment;
- Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
- Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30, but may be subject to change at any time.
- May be required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
- Some on-call time is required
- Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency
- Required to lift up to 70 lbs.
- Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles and heavy equipment
- Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions
- Frequent travel during work day to perform field repairs, as well as to attend trainings and meetings
- May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time hot and cold
- Exposure to loud noises
- Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
- Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
- Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
- Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 9-12,000 feet altitude
- Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
Minimum Qualifications
Experience Only:
- Two (2) years of relevant experience including repairing, overhauling, general maintenance, and rebuilding of engines, accessories, systems, auto bodies, and other mechanical units. Work ranges from minor service to complete system overhauls on heavy construction equipment.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience:
- A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to two (2) years.
- Education/apprenticeship in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics will be considered with submission of a transcript.
- Experience in repairing, overhauling, general maintenance, and rebuilding of engines, accessories, systems, auto bodies, and other mechanical units will be considered.
Conditions of Employment
- Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes.

May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
- Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
- New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
- Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications
The exceptional applicant will be an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic who possesses proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
- Demonstrated success with the duties as listed in the Description of the Job section;
- Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
- Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
- Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy duty diesel vehicles and equipment, up to 10 tons is highly desirable;
- Extensive experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations;
- Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation and A/C is preferred;
- Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
- Effective oral communication and customer service skills;
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
- Strong reasoning, analytic thinking, troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
- Use of innovative approaches when performing repairs, with consideration for available resources, budget, time, efficiency, and safety;
