Secondary Roads Motor Grader Operator

This position performs technical duties in the maintenance of the county right-of-way, by hauling materials with the appropriate equipment, and performing a variety of tasks related to drainage structures and paved/granular roadway maintenance. This position may be designated as an Operator II or Motor Grader Operator and moved to salary grade 13.
  • Operates single axle dump trucks, tandem axle dump trucks, truck and pup combinations, or a tractor-trailer (belly dump) to haul aggregates, dirt, salt, brush, or other material for direct application to roadways, to stockpile locations, or to disposal locations.
  • Operates single or tandem axle dump trucks equipped for winter maintenance to plow snow and apply anti-icing materials.
  • Assists with patching or minor repairs to concrete or asphalt pavements. Repairs may include full depth concrete patches (including assisting with the tasks of pavement removal, preparing and checking grade, setting forms, and placing and finishing concrete), partial depth patches using either Portland cement based or asphalt-based materials, or crack sealing/crack filling.
  • Assist the IRVM staff in brush cutting and tree removal utilizing chain saws, chippers, skid loaders, or similar land clearing equipment.
  • Performs routine and seasonal maintenance and repair to equipment, including daily equipment inspections, greasing, oil and filter changes, cleaning equipment, installing/removing plows or other seasonal equipment, etc.
  • Operates a tracked or wheeled loader to load aggregates, dirt, salt, or other material into trucks or trailers.
  • Occasionally assists the Sign Technician erect, repair, or replace work zone or permanent traffic control devices.
  • Participates in training opportunities.
  • Performs related duties.

Operator II Additional Duties

  • Install, repair, and maintain drainage structures such as reinforced concrete or corrugated metal pipe, reinforced concrete box culverts, corrugated plastic drainage tile, or other like materials. Work performed may utilize excavators, hydro-excavators, skid loaders, sewer jetters, compaction equipment, utility locating equipment, laser levels, and other related equipment.
  • Performs patching and minor repairs to concrete or asphalt pavements. Repairs may include full depth concrete patches (including performing the tasks of pavement removal, preparing and checking grade, setting forms, and placing and finishing concrete), partial depth patches using either Portland cement based or asphalt-based materials, or crack sealing/crack filling. Work performed may utilize skid loaders, single or tandem axle dump trucks, concrete placement or finishing tools, and related equipment or tools.
  • Perform maintenance on concrete or timber bridges including cleaning and removing debris from decks or beam seats, patching of concrete bridge decks, replacement of timber decks and timber stingers, repair or replacement of timber railings or steel beam guardrail, concrete bridge approaches, repair of erosion including grading and placement of revetment, and other related tasks. Work performed may utilize excavators, skid loaders, single or tandem axle dump trucks, pressure washers, sandblasters, pneumatic or electric chipping and hammering tools, and related equipment or tools.
  • Assist in grading projects such as culvert and bridge grading, bank stabilization and erosion control, and roadway regrading. Work performed may utilize padfoot rollers or other vibratory compaction equipment, skid loaders, single axle or tandem axle dump trucks, laser levels, and other related equipment.
  • Operates single or tandem axle dump trucks equipped for winter maintenance to plow snow and apply anti-icing/deicing materials.

Motor Grader Operator Additional Duties

  • Operates a motor grader to grade, shape, or spread rock in the maintenance of granular surfaced roads
  • Operates a motor grader to perform winter maintenance of granular surface roads
  • Operates a motor grader to grade, shape, or spread rock in the maintenance of granular shoulders
  • Operates a road drag pulled by a single axle dump truck or a tractor to maintain granular surfaced roads when conditions are not suitable for access with a motor grader.
  • Performs routine and seasonal maintenance and repair to equipment, including daily equipment inspections, greasing, oil and filter changes, cleaning equipment, installing/removing plows or other seasonal equipment, etc.

CDL Trainer/Equipment Hauler Additional Duties

  • Performs minor building maintenance and housekeeping such as organizing and inventorying supplies, general cleaning, and miscellaneous repairs.
  • The CDL Trainer will haul equipment into and out of multiple job sites. Drive and move various pieces of equipment; including but not limited to oversize/over dimensional loads. Instruct new employees in obtaining their Class A CDL or other driving endorsements. Provide guidance and support through classroom training, range, and behind the wheel training. Manage all equipment used within the training process. Facilitate behind the wheel experiences such as backing up and shifting gears. Observe and evaluate driver's performance and progress while complying with DOT safety regulations. Conduct testing, both in the classroom and behind the wheel, to determine if driver has met DOT requirements for obtaining a CDL.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years work related experience in equipment operations and driving a truck
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement within 6 months of hire .

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic mechanical principles. Skill to perform routine maintenance on equipment such as oil changes, greasing, daily inspections, etc.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of specialized equipment.
  • Skill in operating medium to heavy trucks, trailers, loaders, and other equipment normally used in highway construction, maintenance or winter operations.
  • If designated a Motor Grader Operator must have skill in operating motor graders, including the operation of attachments such as V plows and wings for snow removal, scarifiers, and compaction equipment.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State Commercial Drivers License rules, regulations, and associated Iowa Code.
  • General knowledge of soil/aggregate/material types and uses (i.e. natural gravel, crushed limestone, salt, brine, etc.)
  • General knowledge of various pavement types (i.e. Portland Cement Concrete, Hot Mix Asphalt, etc.) and appropriate repair techniques, such as full depth patches or cold patching with asphalt-based mixes. Portland Cement Concrete repairs require skill in placing and finishing concrete, and the use of rebar.
  • Skill in tree and brush cutting using chain saws, chippers, and related equipment.
  • Skill in understanding written and oral direction, and communicating progress on assigned tasks.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Knowledge and skill in the safe operation of equipment, use of personal protective equipment, and a general understanding of traffic safety (i.e. Iowa DOT Flagger certification, and work zone safety and signing)
  • Knowledge of fundamental PC applications including Microsoft Office software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work required the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
