The leaf removal season will begin October 20th, 2025, and run approximately 8 - 10 weeks.
- Shifts are worked Mon-Sat and are 12-hour shifts, 6am-6pm (6am-2pm when not working overtime), and 10am-10pm (2pm-10pm when not working overtime)
- Sundays are not scheduled but are worked occasionally.
- Employees with satisfactory work performance at the season may be eligible for recall in subsequent seasons.
This is routine manual labor work.
An employee in this class performs manual laboring tasks requiring little or no skill in the use of tools to complete work.
Works as a member of a crew under close supervision or independently under general supervision. Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions outdoors.
Drives to and from job sites to transport personnel, tools, supplies and equipment. Assists with leaf removal by operating leaf vacuum hose and raking leaves. Cleans and maintains division vehicles. Communicates with other employees or supervisors utilizing a mobile or hand-held radio. S weeps walks, streets, and alleys with hand broom. Shovels snow from walks and streets. Loads and unloads heavy material from trucks. Performs a variety of related work as required.Ability to read and write. At least six months of paid experience in general labor work. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
Basic knowledge of hand tools and the standard practices of labor operations.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to communicate in an effective manner. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. This is a classified position.
The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position. If your name is placed on the eligibility list, your name will remain on the eligibility list for one year unless you are removed in accordance with Human Resource policy or hired for a permanent position.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
An applicant having a valid Driver's License from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
Temporary, seasonal and part-time employees are not eligible to enroll in employee benefit plans.
