Under the general direction of the Road Department Fleet Manager, provides repair and maintenance for County Road Department vehicles and equipment. Mechanic may elect to become certified by the State of Michigan or ASE in areas of Master Auto and Heavy-Duty Truck Repair from the determined list of certifications will be eligible for incentive pay, not to exceed sixteen (16) and will be paid 30 cents per hour for each certification they achieve and maintain.
  1. Repairs diesel and gas engines, including automobiles, trucks, lawn equipment, loaders, chainsaws, etc.
  2. Repair Major power train components such as transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, clutches and drive shafts.
  3. Reads blueprints, electrical charts, and diagrams to determine electrical procedure on how a device functions to properly install or repair/troubleshoot 12 & 24-volt electrical systems.
  4. Installs brake shoes, air brake chambers, hydraulic brakes, suspensions, valves, etc.
  5. Diagnoses actual causes of malfunctions and performs repairs as needed.
  6. Repairs Major hydraulic components on large equipment (grader, loaders, backhoes, etc.) such as hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, and load sense systems.
  7. Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance work on diesel and gas engines, including computer-controlled systems such as replacement of spark plugs, fuel filters, and air pollution equipment.
  8. Installs items such as snow plow frames and sanders, underbody scrapers, wiring including lights, and hydraulic systems.
  9. Keeps the working area, tools, and toolboxes neat and clean.
  10. Prioritizes work, maintains schedules, and meets deadlines.
  11. Performs repair, and fabrication on road department buildings and related facilities.
  12. Makes service calls in the field, returns vehicle to garage for repair or otherwise assists in the repair process. May operate towing vehicle if necessary.
  13. Uses welding, cutting torch, and brazing equipment to fabricate new or old equipment such as snow plows, graders, and trucks.
  14. Performs body, paint, and sheet metal work as required.
  15. Repairs steering components such as power steering, tie rods, steering gear boxes, drag links and idler arms.
  16. Repairs and/or replaces tires.
  17. Works with and assists fellow mechanics to ensure coordination of duties, productivity and efficiency.
  18. Follows MIOSHA & CCRD safety rules and using provided safety equipment.
  19. Maintains paperwork to record the use of inventory and other items of equipment.
  20. Reviews equipment records and ensures the accuracy of maintenance activities.
  21. Participates in classes and training sessions when available or needed.
  22. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
  1. The job requires as a minimum the completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a specialized mechanic training preferred.
  2. Specialized or technical training equivalent to the first year of college in vocational technology, automotive maintenance, or the equivalent.
  3. Three to five years of experience as a mechanic. Experience in maintaining and repairing road operation vehicles preferred.
  4. State of Michigan Master Auto/Truck Certification preferred, possession of a valid Michigan Operators License, CDL, Class B with Air Brakes, and DOT Physical Card.
Working Conditions
  1. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibrations.
  2. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and requires hearing protection.
  3. Occasionally works outside, discomfort due to heat/cold, dust, wet and/or humid conditions.
  4. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  5. Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) are frequently required. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  6. On-call availability to handle emergencies/crisis situations at all hours is occasionally required.
  7. Will occasionally be required to push, pull, carry, bend, twist, stand for extended periods of time, work on equipment with arms overhead, and lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.
