To operate a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets and related facilities. This is the entry-level class in the Equipment Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series under close supervision. This class is typically used as a training class; employees will need some related work experience.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of duties including hand and power tools, street roller, welder, backhoe, front-end loader, jackhammer, dump truck, chainsaw, brushhog and tractors.
- Participate in street repairs; prepare holes in street surfaces for repair; apply patching material to fill hole.
- Assist in laying bricks and using the tar pot to tack streets; build fences as assigned.
- Trim and remove foliage obstructing traffic signs or signals; cut out weeds growing along cracks in the streets; mow creek area.
- Participate in mixing, pouring and finishing concrete.
- Clear storm drains of refuse and debris.
- Haul asphalt, sand and gravel to work site.
- Clean and maintain order of work areas.
- Repair tire flats in shop area.
- Maintain service and repair records on division machinery and equipment.
- May assist with refuse collection; may operate the collection vehicle and place refuse in vehicle compactor.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
- Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
- Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.
- Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
- Location of various City streets and addresses.
- Procedures for patching and repairing street surfaces.
- Procedures for installing poles, pipes and traffic signs.
- Modern construction methods and practices.
- Techniques for mixing, pouring and finishing concrete.
Ability to:
- Learn to pour and finish concrete.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn the location of various City streets and addresses.
- Learn the techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
- Perform the physical requirements of the job.
- Perform work in undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination.
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
- Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Lay hot mix asphalt.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years construction related work.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Possession of a valid drivers license.
- Must have ability to obtain Class A or B CDL within six (6) months of request when requested by supervisor.

- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
- Regularly exposed to vibration.
