The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently looking for enthusiastic engineers who have a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and can provide success in collaborative efforts to support the South-Central Region Project Development Office. We are seeking entry-level and journey-level engineers, as well as college students projected to graduate from an engineering program by June 2026. This opportunity is open for in-training, which means that depending on your qualifications, you may be offered a position at a lower level along with a formal on-the-job training plan to complete within a specified timeframe. Successful completion of the training plan will result in a promotion to the next level within the job class series, and a minimum 5% pay increase!

This position directly supports the agency strategic plan and goal areas by leading a workplace that supports and promotes training and development for professional growth and upward mobility, creating, influencing, and fostering a physically and psychologically safe workplace where all employees feel that they belong, and ensuring, through adherence to WSDOT policies, that the maintenance and preservation of assigned roadways and assets are administered to the expected quality, safety, and stewardship standards to support Washingtons long-term resilience.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Transportation Engineer 2 will:

  • Prepare Plans, Specification, and Estimate packages for projects assigned to the design team.
  • Prepare cost estimates. Including calculation of quantities.
  • Prepare contract provisions including writing special provisions.
  • Prepare information for, and coordinate with, specialty groups.
  • Operate InRoads and MicroStation (OpenRoads) to create computer-aided engineering deliverables required for plan production.
  • Review work of team members for completeness and accuracy.
  • Create and/or assist with the development and management of design schedules to aid in delivering projects on time.
  • Keep supervisors and office management informed of project progress, issues, or needs.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with contractors, designers, other team members, support offices, and the public

Qualifications

Foundational Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineering principles, typically acquired through formal education or equivalent on-the-job experience (e.g., experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Technician 3). Ability to apply engineering concepts to real-world scenarios in support of planning, design, construction, or maintenance activities.

Professional Certification or Academic Preparation: Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or a Masters degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, transportation, traffic engineering, or a closely related field.

Technical Interpretation and Analysis: Skilled in reading, interpreting, analyzing, and producing contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards.

Communication and Interpersonal Proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders including engineers, contractors, and the public.

Computer and Engineering Software Literacy: Proficient in the use of engineering technology, including computer-aided drafting (CAD) and other engineering software applications used for design, analysis, and documentation.

Physical Capability and Field Readiness: Ability to safely transport up to 40 pounds, work in confined spaces, traverse uneven terrain, and perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Certification as an Engineer-In Training (EIT), or bachelors degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience with exposure to design, construction, traffic, materials, program management, or other WSDOT related fields.
  • Advanced experience with computer software such as MicroStation (CADD), InRoads (Geometric design), P6 (Scheduling), Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, and Excel.

The salaries for each are listed below:

  • Transportation Engineer 1: $64,776 $87,048
  • Transportation Engineer 2: $71,472 $96,144
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
