Job Summary: Operates the water production system and reverse osmosis water treatment plant.
Essential Job Duties: Repairs leaks, manholes, pumps, motors and other equipment associated with water production. Installs pumps, motors, valves, charts and other equipment necessary to operate well fields, water production and wastewater disposal. Assist wastewater and other departments when required. Operates all equipment required in the operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater operation. Reads water meters and does re-reads as necessary. Assist in the completion of work orders for the water and wastewater department. Takes test samples of water as required by permits. Participates in the long and short range planning for system improvement. Takes care of the preventive maintenance programs on plant motor and equipment. Climbs elevated tanks and standpipe when required. Performs after hour stand-by as required for water and wastewater.
Non-essential Job Duties: May be required to do task as directed for other City departments. May be required to make deliveries and pickups for other departments. Ability to perform manual labor task as necessary. Ability to communicate with citizens, contractors and employees.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: Ability to sit, stand, and transport self from building to building. Ability to bend, stoops, lifts, and climbs into small areas. Ability to lift pumps, pipe, motors, fittings, clamps and other related equipment to complete the work and able to turn valves as necessary. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperature and may also be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals or materials while in the field.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge: Knowledge of routine construction, maintenance, and repair methods used in water production/distribution, water treatment plant operations, and wastewater collection systems; knowledge of applicable city and departmental rules and regulations.
Skills: Skill to communicate orally; skill in performing work requiring strength and agility in all weather conditions; skills in frequently lifting heavy objects; skill in preventative and minor maintenance on tools and equipment; skill in driving a light truck; skill in operating pneumatic and hydraulic power tools and equipment; skill in using hand tools to perform routine manual labor tasks; skill in operating trenching equipment, high service pumps and motors, emergency generators, backhoe, bobcat, mowers and sewer machines.
Abilities: Ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to identify and correct potential safety hazards; ability to sense position and movement of body members; ability to maintain body orientation; ability to manipulate things with the hands; ability to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time; ability to coordinate hand and foot movements; ability to rapidly perform various psychomotor responses in proper sequence; ability to establish and maintain working relationships; ability to determine equipment and supply requirements; ability to present oral and written instructions; ability to lead the work of other.
Education: High School graduation or GED.
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of water distribution system, water production system, water treatment plant operation and wastewater collection system. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills, and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certificates: Texas Class C driver's license. Texas Department of Health Grade C Wastewater Certificate and Texas Water Commission, TNRCC, ClassC Wastewater Operators Certificate. (Must continually attend classes to keep certificate current and work toward higher certification)
