Journeyman Electrician

A journeyman electrician is a licensed tradesperson who has completed an apprenticeship and passed a licensing exam, allowing them to work independently on various electrical projects, generally under the supervision of a master electrician.

Summary/Objective

Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical systems and components in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Ensures all work meets required safety codes and is properly inspected.

Reading technical drawings, blueprints, and electrical code specifications to plan installations.

They install and maintain various electrical components such as wiring, fixtures, and equipment like circuit breakers and transformers.

Troubleshooting and repairing electrical issues using testing devices is also a critical function.

Adhering to safety regulations, including OSHA and the National Electrical Code (NEC), is mandatory.

The job is physically demanding, involving lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.

Journeyman electricians need problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve electrical issues.

Effective communication with clients, colleagues, and supervisors is essential.

They are also responsible for documenting their work, using various tools, and may supervise apprentices or provide work estimates.

Key qualifications

Qualifications typically include:

Relevant hands-on experience, often from completing a 4-year apprenticeship. In Texas, this usually means 8,000 hours of supervised training.

A valid journeyman electrician license or certification is required.

A strong understanding of electrical principles, wiring schematics, and the National Electrical Code (NEC) is necessary, along with analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Valid Texas Driver's License

Basic Electrical and Conduit experience.

Work environment

The work environment can include both indoor and outdoor locations and requires constant vigilance. Exposure to dust, protective finishes, mechanical parts, electricity, noise, and vibration is common. Use of a company vehicle may also be required.

You will have a company truck, but these must remain with the company and will not be taken home.

Candidates will be placed upon a 30 day probationary period when starting.
