The Opportunity
This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in GES Global Engineering Services division.
The Sr. Refrigeration group handles, Chiller repair and preventive maintenance, repair of ice machines, refrigerators, and freezer units, low temperature refrigeration systems, freeze dryers, environmental chambers, incubators, steam and hot water troubleshooting and repairing, air dryers, lab heating and cooling equipment dehumidifiers, and stability chambers. The Sr. Refrigeration Mechanic will work on the most complex HVAC/ Refrigeration systems and equipment and control systems. Will troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform all required tasks and make repairs necessary to return the equipment to operation in a timely manner. Good judgment is necessary in matters pertaining to customer satisfaction and quality of services performed.
What Youll Work On
- Strong knowledge of process refrigeration systems, cold storage refrigeration systems and ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Performs advanced mechanical tasks and PM procedures on a variety of HVAC/Refrigeration equipment throughout Abbott Lake County locations.
- Work includes troubleshooting, ordering parts and installation of parts, and material on equipment such as fractional horsepower motors, unit circulation fans, basic electrical devices associated with the control of the units, chillers, air conditioners, compressors, pumps, ultra low temperature freezers, walk in coolers, and freezers, etc.
- Performs preventative maintenance work on all types of plant HVAC/Refrigeration equipment including fans, valves, actuators, etc.
- May install bearings, seals, belts, gaskets, etc.
- HVAC/Refrigeration equipment utilizing a variety of gauges, tools and test equipment including vacuum and pressure gauges, leak detectors, torque wrenches, multimeters, ammeters, etc.
- Does mechanical overhauls and performs preventive maintenance work on all types of plant refrigeration equipment.
- Performs refrigerant reclaiming service on various systems and refrigerant types.
- Assists in ensuring that GMP and safe work policies and procedures are followed and maintained at all times in accordance with established company policies.
- Orders materials and parts from the stockroom and venders, initiates work orders, and various other forms that may be required.
- When required, processes paperwork such as work orders, house requisitions, and various other forms that may be required.
- Effectively communicates the status of jobs to customers.
- Ensures that adequate information is shared with other work groups when transferring work orders.
- Participates in work group team meetings and actively looks for methods and work processes that improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.
- In addition to work that may also be performed by STEP Mechanic and HVAC/Refrigeration, the Sr.
- Refrigeration Mechanic will work as a multi-skill trades person, doing electrical, mechanical, building maintenance and/or other work on special assignments as required and assigned.
- Also must demonstrate proficiency in the BAS, Environmental, and HVAC areas.
- Will have advanced understanding of HVAC/Refrigeration theory and application to air handling systems in a commercial and/or industrial environment.
- Must be expert in the use of mechanic hand tools and wrenches, test equipment, measuring devices, and power tools including drills, hammer drills, saws-ails, etc.
- Will have the knowledge and experience to perform advanced troubleshooting and mechanical repairs on various devices including fans, pumps, valves, actuators, etc.
- Must also have the ability to do brazing and/or soldering of heating and cooling coils, etc.
- Will be able to perform advanced troubleshooting and mechanical repairs and to install refrigeration equipment and accessories according to Abbott Engineering Standards.
- Must be certified by the Federal EPA for operation of refrigerant reclaiming equipment and for proper usage and disposal of all refrigerants.
- Must have knowledge relating to the installation of HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and accessories according to Abbott Engineering Standards.
- On an independent basis, the individual must be able to evaluate the use of various resources and make knowledgeable decisions in regard to safety and company standards and policies.
- Must know all CHAMP functions that pertain to refrigeration maintenance, PM and related activities.
- Manage project plan through project lifecycle and maintain resource and financial allocations. Maintain documentation, provide data management, and conduct lessons learned at appropriate project phases
- Work directly with functional area leaders to resolve issues that impact completion of project objectives; determine when to escalate issues to appropriate levels of management.
- Create and deliver project review presentations to leadership stakeholders.
- GMEA Operational support (as assigned) for overall functional needs (e.g. AQR Audit, reporting requirements, preparation and support for critical meetings, etc.)
- Serve as backup (as assigned) for GMEA Operational financial and procurement support (Contracts/SOW/P.O.)
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/ GED or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
- 5+ Formal training and work responsibility in the field of commercial or industrial HVAC/Refrigeration system maintenance.
- As an alternative, must have completed all requirements of the Abbott STEP program for HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanics. This experience must indicate proficiency in all aspects of maintenance of HVAC/Refrigeration system equipment including the demonstrated ability to work well with others in a commercial and/or industrial work environment.
