Join our team as an Electrical Technician Apprentice and develop the skills needed to support and maintain the City's electrical systems. This position provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals while learning to troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical systems essential to city operations. The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department.

Under direct and general supervision, the Electrical Technician Apprentice will learn to perform a variety of tasks related to electrical service, maintenance, repair and installation work on traffic signals, streetlights, and other equipment; various types of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in City buildings; and facilities building electrical systems, alarms, communication equipment. Other duties include ensuring the safety of equipment through routine maintenance checks, interacting with City staff and the public, and identifying safety and health hazards. Candidates who possess some electrical experience as well as relevant coursework (or completion of an apprenticeship training program) in electrical systems is desirable.

  • 2% for Boats U.S. CA On the Water Certificate, a Cal Maritime Basic Safety and an Assoc. of Marina Industries Marina Electric Certificate
  • 2% for an employee who is certified and authorized by the City Manager or designee to train other City employees on the proper use of a narrow isle forklift, lift truck, and powered pallet jack.
  • 2% for an employee who is certified and authorized by the City Manager designee to train other City employees on the proper use of a front-end loader, skid steer loader and a backhoe.
  • 2% Class A/B Trainer pay
  • 2% for an employee who possesses an Underground Storage Tank certificate and/or Pipeline & Hazardous Safety Administration Qualified Evaluator and authorized by the City Manager or designee, to provide, and does so perform, the daily, monthly, and other assigned functions as assigned.
Employees receives either the certification pay for a single item or the combined pay (to 10% max) for multiple items.

  • Performs highly skilled electrical and electronic installation, repair, service and maintenance work on a variety of electrical installations, systems, traffic signals, pumps and other equipment in City facilities and streets.
  • Repairs, maintains and installs street lighting poles on all city-owned streetlights; inspects and repairs streetlights and control circuits and park lights and control systems.
  • Programs, calibrates, repairs, and maintains traffic signal controllers, lights, traffic detection and other equipment.
  • Inspects switch gear, transformers, relays, motors, pumps, generators and a variety of other types of electro-mechanical equipment for proper operation and makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as directed; repairs, replaces, disassembles, assembles, installs and tests electrical apparatus equipment, telemetry and wiring for power, lighting and instrumentation as directed; works under the appropriate applicable provision of the electrical code, approved plans and specifications, traffic signal phasing and standard industry practice.
Stationary Engineering:
  • Operates, maintains, and repair boilers, heaters, pumps, valves, apprentices, and lines used in the distribution of steam and heated or processed water; operates, repairs and maintains refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, traps, transfer pumps, expansion valves, stop valves, and float valves, together with all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperatures.
  • Operates, maintains and repairs air compressors, together with distribution lines and all valves and devices for air control; all natural and manufactured gas distribution lines, and manufacturing systems including all valves and control devices; water filters, softeners, piping and pumps used in conjunction with water distribution.
  • Operates, repairs and maintains all types of motors and engines used to power pumps, compressors and fans; repairs and maintains single-phase and multi-phase electrical circuits up to 550 volts; repairs and maintains electrical transformers, motors, controls, machinery fixtures, appliances and elevators; repairs and maintains electronic systems such as clocks, closed circuit television, automatic alarm systems, security systems, energy management systems, equal potential grounding and automatic power transfers; calibrates control systems for air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilation systems, including air balance, humidistat and solid state electronic motor control amplifiers.

  • Assist in planning and scheduling preventative maintenance programs; develops and implements emergency plans; makes recommendations to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Performs troubleshooting, diagnostic, programming work; reads and interprets electrical and mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Estimates labor, material and costs associated with repair, installation or modification work.
  • Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable codes, policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification) Education and/or Experience: The equivalent of a high school diploma and three (3) years of applicable experience in construction, maintenance, or related work. Electrical education or experience is desirable. License/Certificate: Possession of a valid class C California driver's license. Possess and maintain proof of auto liability insurance.
