Step into a critical operations role that helps keep Wichitas wastewater treatment system running safely and efficiently. As an Equipment Operator II in the Sewer Treatment Division , youll operate specialized trucks, tractors, and heavy-duty agricultural equipment used in the land application of biosolids and the maintenance of wastewater systems. Your work directly supports public health, environmental safety, and regulatory compliance. In this hands-on position, youll perform daily equipment checks, routine mechanical maintenance, and operate machinery across open land and treatment facilities. You may also serve as a field lead, guiding a small crew in essential land application tasks. This role is ideal for skilled operators who want to be part of a mission-driven team making a visible difference every day in the communitys infrastructure and environmental stewardship.
Workdays & Hours -Monday - Friday - 7:00am - 3:30pm
Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU)
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.

**Posting may come down at any time**- Operates tractors and trucks with special attached equipment such as power loaders, backhoes, winches, snow plows, and other attachments which are used for varied maintenance purposes.
- Operates equipment in performing bio solids land application and sewage treatment maintenance work, such as wheeled loaders, large agricultural tractors, spreaders, hydro-lift, and liquid sludge tanker truck.
- Operates special equipment used in sewer work such as sewer cleaning machines, pumps, or cables.
- Operates a truck and leads a small maintenance crew in maintaining, repairing and cleaning streets and sewers.
- Operates equipment in performing maintenance work.
- Performs mechanical maintenance and service work on equipment operated.
- May act as a backup operator or assistant to an Equipment Operator III.

- Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
- Knowledge of the principles of automotive equipment operation.
- Ability to lead the work of a small number of helpers on maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in the land application of bio solids and maintenance activities such as those used in operating and maintaining sewage treatment systems.
- Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance activities.
- Ability to maneuver self into riding machines with two foot steep first step, and onto frame or fender as required to perform fluid/filter check daily and maintenance every 100 hours or as needed on mowers and plows.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to lift, carry and/or maneuver up to 150 with the assistance of another person.
- Ability to maintain balance and physically tolerate riding heavy equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time.
- Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with traffic and machine exhaust, open grounds, and construction.
- Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs.
- Ability to continuously perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk (up to half a mile at a time) for most of an eight hour shift.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
- This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations that would include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Six (6) months of experience operating farm equipment or heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, or spreaders in a wastewater treatment facility.
- Ability to obtain Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
- A valid driver's license
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
- Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement.
Please note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
