and Duties

Construct, maintain, troubleshoot and repair highway lighting equipment, traffic signal field wiring and hardware, changeable message signs, extinguishable message signs, traffic count equipment, and detection equipment, highway advisory radio equipment, building electrical systems, pumping plants, scale house and rest area systems. Assist Caltrans Electrician II with the more complex control equipment associated with traffic signals, ramp meters, and changeable message sign.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Electrician I exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Permanent, intermittent positions and are not subject to Post and Bid. A permanent, intermittent employee may work up to 1,500 hours in any 12 consecutive months. The number of hours and schedule of work shall be determined based upon the operational needs of each department.

Working Conditions

Position located in 11325 Sanders Dr., Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County.

The incumbent may work under various climates and conditions. Work may be performed inside of climate-controlled building, but most operations will take place alongside, over or upon state highway and right of ways. The incumbent will be exposed to noise, inclement weather, dirt, odors, uneven surfaces, heights up to 250 feet above pavement or water, confined spaces, concrete products, cleaning solvents, high speed traffic conditions and moving construction equipment. The incumbent must be willing to work odd hours, swing shift, night shift, and weekends and be available for trouble calls outs.

This position requires visual and color acuity adequate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, willingness to work at odd hours, be available for day or night calls, stay abreast of current technological changes in the fields of electricity and electronics, work up to 550 feet above pavement or water, work in the midst of traffic, and have the ability to withstand working under adverse (e.g., cold, wet, windy) weather conditions.
