The Tactical Space Systems Division is seeking a Manager 2 Structural Engineering to lead an experienced team of thermal engineers supporting Commercial, Civil and National Security Space spacecraft system design and manufacturing performing thermal engineering and analysis tasks.
Position Responsibilities:
- Performs as a working manager by being both an individual contributor and functional leader of a team (80-90% direct labor, 10-20% indirect labor) of 8-12 engineers.
- Will be an individual contributor within the Propulsion group providing mechanical support on TSSD programs
- Support improvement initiatives, including employee engagement
- Assist in hiring staff to establish and maintain a broad range of capabilities across the business area that meets the areas overall needs and objectives
- Identify training for staff to support a broad range of capabilities across the company as well as employee growth
- Work collaboratively with Program Managers across NG facilities within the overall framework of the organization
- Be an active and engaged manager; know what programs employees are working on and the tasks they are performing on those programs
- Provide general management, mentorship, motivation, guidance, and support to assigned staff
- Support the Capital procurement process by recommending tools, equipment, and facilities, needed to support the organization
- Support Mechanical IRAD initiatives
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5-10 years of mechanical/Propulsion engineering experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with managing a team of 3-5 engineers.
- Experience in managing or leading programs/projects and manage cost accounts related to propulsion subsystem design, development and/or manufacturing,
- Has demonstrated strengths or direct experiences in Propulsion subsystem design/analysis, manufacturing and/or development. Relevant areas of experience include any but not all of the following.
- Fluid analysis, 2D or CFD using Matlab or other industry applicable software
- Propulsion system conceptual design and development, design layouts or trade studies
- Manufacturing and test of pressure fed propulsion systems
- Launch operations experience with propellant handling or propulsion system ground operations in preparation for flight
- Propulsion system light operations and maneuver experience
- Experience with liquid propulsion system hardware and/or with their design and development.
- Possess demonstrated leadership skills to develop and build engineering teams and assess technical performance
- Possess the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with functional management, technical staff and peers and leadership in the business areas
- Work on-site at the Dulles campus a minimum of 3 days per week.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience or knowledge of fluid analysis or propulsion system design or other comparable Propulsion subsystem technical knowledge base
- Relevant experience includes liquid propulsion system design or analysis, experience modeling or analyzing propulsion system flow circuits, transient flow analysis or relevant 2D flow modeling.
- Experience or background with aerospace propulsion hardware design, development, qualification or procurements, subsystem testing or launch operations experience and mission operations flight experience.
- Active DoD TS Clearance or ability to obtain one.
