  • Los Alamos, New Mexico
  • Full Time
What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division (ESD) at Los Alamos National Laboratory delivers innovative engineering solutions in support of the Lab's scientific and national security missions. As part of the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO), this position supports the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program for system, structure, and component modifications across nuclear, accelerator, and non-nuclear facilities spanning 38 square miles.

We are seeking a motivated and technically proficient Designer/Drafter 2 to support design projects and the development and maintenance of technical baselines. This early-career role involves using advanced 3D CAD and Product Data Management (PDM) tools to contribute to the configuration and documentation of complex facility systems.

You will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to create partial and full design packages, while ensuring configuration integrity through baseline documentation. This position blends hands-on design execution with strategic support for data and configuration management across high-consequence projects.

The Designer/Drafter 2 receives operational supervision from a designated supervisor and technical guidance from engineers and senior designers. While this role does not supervise others, it may involve mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Design and Assessment: Create detailed 2D and 3D designs to assess, maintain, and upgrade facility systems. Conduct site visits to evaluate, identify, and document deficiencies, supporting new construction, renovations, and repairs with basic design solutions.

Technical Design and Calculations: Produce technical calculations and preliminary design recommendations for engineer review, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, and IEEE.

Collaboration and Problem-Solving: Work closely with engineers, stakeholders, and cross-Disciplinary teams on design reviews, interface clarifications, and problem resolution. Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Safety and Security Compliance: Ensure safety and security are integral to every task, maintain relevant training, and stop work when safety or security is compromised.

Engineering Expertise: Apply knowledge of engineering policies, procedures, and technical standards in drafting and design. Provide cross-functional support and address unique challenges in both static and dynamic applications.

Advanced CAD Proficiency: Utilize high-level 3D parametric CAD systems and Product Management tools to optimize modeling standards and practices. Mentor junior designers and perform drawing checks according to ASME Y14.5 or laboratory drafting standards.

Project Leadership and Support: Define requirements, develop designs for large-scale projects, and contribute to cost estimation, scheduling, and design strategies. Independently complete complex tasks with minimal supervision and mentor low-level staff.

Creative Problem-Solving: Devise original, innovative solutions for complex design challenges, often impacting project outcomes. Solutions require ingenuity, creativity, and technical expertise.

Material Expertise: Evaluate and select engineering materials for complex fabrication needs, ensuring suitability for design objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in design reviews, ensure compatibility across disciplines, and address issues to deliver cohesive design packages. Independent and Team Contributions: Balance leadership, mentorship, and independent responsibilities to deliver expert results with long-term project impact.
