Introduction This is technical and skilled electrical work. Bargaining unit position. Nature Of Work An employee in this class is responsible for performing technicaland skilled electrical installation, maintenance and repair work on equipmentin municipal buildings, facilities and plants. Under general supervision,employees receive instructions either orally or in writing, sometimes in theform of sketches and blueprints. Work, which is of more than averagedifficulty, requires the exercise of reasonable initiative and independentjudgment in determining work procedures and in performing lead work over lowerlevel employees on certain assignments. Employees might be required to workwith hazardous high voltages when performing installation, modification and/orrepair tasks. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completionfor compliance with acceptable electrical standards to include periodicinspections by the electrical bureau. Examples of Duties Performselectrical work in municipal buildings, facilities, and plants; installs,maintains, modifies, and repairs electrical fixtures and equipment includingpower appliances, machinery, overhead circuits, underground conduits, motors,relays, switches, and control boxes up to and including 480V application and DCvoltages; installs wall outlets and connects motors, appliances, heating andcooling equipment, and transformers; installs underground and overheadcommunication cables, feeders, loops; and electrical distribution panelinstallation.
Maintains,repairs, and adjusts meters, governors and timers; installs, maintains andrepairs electrical motors and generators used in various pumping operations;uses hand, bench, and machine tools in repair and maintenance of cranes, pumps,and other plant machinery and equipment.
Transportspeople, materials, tools, and equipment to and from sites to ensure efficiencyand safety; operates light and medium automotive equipment.Maintenanceand repair of lighting distribution systems to include controllers,opto-splitters, mergers, terminators, wireless data transmission systems (DMX,Ethernet).
Detectscauses of electrical failures; interprets and ensures compliance withelectrical codes; calculates line leads to determine wire and equipment sizeand capacity; prepares sketches for electrical layouts and installation.Trainsand leads electricians and other workers in electrical repair and maintenancework, as required; maintains reports and records of servicing and electricalmaintenance.
Establishesequipment repair priorities to ensure prompt attention to priority requests.Performsgeneral maintenance work and light construction at municipal building andfacilities as required.Loads andunloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials manually inorder to complete assigned duties.Preparesmaterials and cost estimate for repair, maintenance, and inspection to ensuretimely and efficient compliance.
Performsrelated work as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standards, tools, methods, materials, and practices of the electrical trade.

Working knowledge of: occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions, to include work with high voltages; municipal and national electrical codes; lighting systems and controls with ability to troubleshoot, repair, maintain and program related equipment and accessories, preferably DMX-512A systems.

Ability to: interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints; locate, define and repair defects in electrical facilities and equipment; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; plan, layout, install, alter, repair, and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment; train and lead others in performance of work assignments as required; understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Skill in: use and care of standard tools, equipment and testing devices of the electrical trade; operation and care of light to medium automotive equipment.

Physical Requirements Ability to lift 20-40 lbs., mostly standing and acombination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer,typing and viewing a monitor. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school, including or supplemented by special courses in electrical repair and maintenance, and three (3) years in electrical maintenance or repair experience as a licensed Journeyman electrician. Licenses or Certifications Possession of: a Journeyman Electrician license; possession of a valid Florida drivers license required; a valid Florida commercial driver's license may be required. Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
