BUILDING CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR - APPRENTICE (Electrical and Mechanical Opportunities)

Under supervision, inspects various construction projects for compliance with the current Building, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical codes. The Building Division Apprenticeship Program provides the apprentice with trade understanding, technical knowledge, and skills to perform building inspections within the building construction industry. The Apprenticeship Program contains beneficial educational material from basic principles to advanced technical aspects of the building trade, enhanced with practical daily professional on-the-job training. Work is performed within the framework provided by construction codes and Building Division policies. All work is performed, supervised, and audited by the Primary Mentor as required by the Building Division Apprenticeship Program. All work is audited periodically through oral and written communications, and auditing of inspections. Performance is ultimately reviewed by the Building Official through conferences and discussions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification. Vocational degree or college degree in Building Construction/Inspection or verifiable work experience in Building Construction/Inspection may be substituted for up to three (3) years of the Apprenticeship Program.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Driver's License in their state of residency and obtain a Florida Driver's License and PBC Risk Management Department driving history approval within 60 days of hire. Must pass the International Code Council (ICC) National Commercial Inspector examination in the trade/discipline sought within 120 days of hire.

To Remain in the Building Division Apprenticeship Program:

  • Apprentice must acquire Building Code Administrators and Inspections Board (BCAIB) approval for entry into the applicable PBC Internship Certification Program within 180 days of hire and maintain active participation in the Program for the duration of the apprenticeship.
  • Apprentice must pass the Principles and Practices exam prior to completing the entire Apprenticeship Program.
  • Apprentice must pass a BCAIB approved 40-hour code training course in the category sought prior to completing the entire Apprenticeship Program.

Valid Florida Driver's License and PBC Risk Management Department driving history approval within 60 days of hire.
