Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM

In this role, you will:

Review and approve permit applications. Inspect and evaluate new building construction, alterations, and repair of public and private buildings for compliance.

Investigate complaints and identify the nature and extent of the problem. Prepare inspectional reports. Inspect existing buildings to determine if unsafe or dangerous conditions exist.

Issue stop work order for violations of codes and ordinances, and confer with engineers, architects, and contractors on corrective measures.

Advise, recommend, and answer questions both in person and on the phone with property owners, contractors, city officials, and the general public.

Maintain a detailed daily record of inspections performed. Prepare written reports and issue notices to correct violations.

Initiate legal action against violators who refuse to comply with code and ordinances, maintain contact with the legal department and appear in court as required.

Qualifications:

This position requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school and five years of work experience in the field of building construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Class D Driver's License is required. Possession of or ability to acquire and maintain ICC Building Inspector Certification within time frame specified by the City of Springfield. Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
