Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Sr. Electrical & Mechanical Technician performs journey-level work on complex electrical (up to and including 69Kv substations), mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Essential Functions
Leads Electrical Mechanics and Electrical/Mechanical Technicians in performing electrical/mechanical work
Performs failure analysis on failed equipment and works with the Division's Maintenance & Operations Strategists to develop strategies to prevent future failures
Maintains electrical substations up to 69Kv
Performs repairs on various complex mechanical systems such as pumps, compressors, conveyors, intake and bar screens, valves, drive units, fans, etc.
Responsible for load testing, transporting, and connecting the Division's numerous portable standby generators to WSSC Water plants, depots, pumping stations, SMV's, PRV's, etc. to provide backup power as needed
Responsible for delivering and operating the Division's crane truck to maintain equipment throughout WSSC Water plants, depots, and facilities
Utilizes, reviews, and updates electrical and mechanical drawings to support maintenance and troubleshooting tasks
Installs and maintains pumps, motors, gearboxes, pipes, valves, and electrical control systems in WSSC Water plants, depots, and facilities
Maintains pneumatic and hydraulic control systems on valves and bubbler systems in WSSC Water plants, depots, and facilities
Maintains electronic control systems of various voltages and types such as variable speed and synchronous motors
Other Functions
Installs a wide variety of electrical or mechanical equipment
Serves as project lead on most projects and may serve as the liaison between the maintenance staff and equipment owner
Performs other related duties as required
Work Environment And Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed at water/wastewater plants, depots, and other maintenance facilities
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Thorough knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical/mechanical trade
Thorough knowledge of electrical/mechanical construction and maintenance, including installation and/or modification of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, automatic starting equipment, etc.
Thorough knowledge of electronic repair practices and methods
Skilled in the use of advanced electrical troubleshooting tools and equipment
Ability to work from and modify electrical and construction drawings, schematics, and specifications
Ability to operate substations up to 69Kv
Ability to work effectively with workers from different disciplines
Ability to work in inclement weather and fluctuating temperatures, climb ladders, scaffolding, and descend underground, as well as exposure to the hazards of working in confined spaces with high voltage electricity
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent
3+ years electrical/mechanical experience, including 2+ years experience in the maintenance of high voltage switchgear and substations up to 69Kv, as well as repairing and servicing equipment such as oil circuit breakers, transformers, roll-out breakers, switchgear controls, and protective relays
3+ years of experience in reading electrical one-line drawings, diagrams of high voltage substations and switchgear, and interconnecting diagrams and equipment location drawings
Completion of technical coursework in basic electricity, basic mechanics, blueprints, and schematics
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid driver's license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
Shift work, on-call, and mandatory overtime may be required
Certified in shaft alignment for rotating machinery
Certified in mobile crane operation

Salary $35.72- $60.36 per hour
