To apply, please visit: General Job Summary Under general supervision of the Deputy Town Manager or their designee, the Senior Building Inspector is responsible for performing inspections on residential, mixed-use, and commercial construction projects within the Town of Westlake (the Town). This role ensures compliance with approved plans, building codes, fire codes, zoning ordinances, and other applicable regulations. The position requires administrative and technical duties and frequent contact with Town officials, developers, contractors, and the public. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building codes, construction practices, fire codes, and other life safety codes; and will combine this background with exceptional communication skills, excellent analytical skills and desire to find solutions. The ideal Senior Building Inspector will be approachable, knowledgeable, and eager to provide exceptional customer care. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of federal, state, and local construction-related laws and ordinances. Ability to read and interpret codes, ordinances, engineering documents, and specifications. Familiarity with standard permitting practices. Ability to detect construction deviations and ensure code compliance. Strong computer proficiency (e.g., permit databases, file management). Effective verbal and written communication; public speaking skills. Ability to self-initiate work and meet deadlines. May occasionally supervise, train, or guide others as assigned. Duties and Responsibilities: Inspect new and existing residential and commercial structures for compliance with all adopted building codes, floodplain, and city ordinances. Serve as project coordinator for commercial projects. Perform certificate of occupancy inspections for new and existing commercial projects along with Fire and Planning Departments. Review residential and commercial construction plans and provide comment letters to applicants. Document deficiencies and deviations from approved plans; generate electronic inspection reports. Maintain computer records related to inspections, licenses, permits, certificates. Contribute to code development and revision. Conduct site inspections to include, but not limited to landscaping, irrigation, sidewalks, and driveways, and documents site conditions with photographs Provide excellent customer service. Assist with code enforcement issues. Coordinate with other departments on code matters. Maintain punctual and reliable attendance. Uphold ethical standards and integrity. Other Duties: Contribute to departmental goals and compliance. Conduct pre-construction meetings. Exhibit strong time management and ethics. Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned. Lifting: This position requires medium to heavy physical work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects Environment: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions, including rain, wind, and extreme heat and cold temperatures. The employee occasionally works at significant heights or in excavations and roadways and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; may work prolonged or irregular hours. Texas State Plumbing Inspectors License (required).
International Code Council (ICC) certifications (preferred).
Knowledge and training on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Accessibility standards.

3-5 years of field inspection experience related to all phases of building construction.
Must successfully pass a criminal background check, including fingerprinting, due to interactions on the Westlake Academy campus.
Valid Texas Class C Driver s License.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Ideal Experience and Qualifications:
Associate s degree or higher from an accredited college or institution in building science, construction management, urban planning, or related field.
5+ years of experience in growing communities with construction safety oversight.
2+ years of commercial inspection experience.
Effective communication and customer service skills.
ICC combination certification (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing).
