The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team. SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Duties:

70% Field Duties:

  • Contacts property owners along a project's influence area to advise them of proposed surveying activities and obtains permission to enter upon private property to conduct the survey.

  • Establishes horizontal and vertical control marks throughout the project area.

  • Establishes vertical control by running through the control points with a level loop.

  • Coordinates the collection of 3-dimensional field data throughout the project and verifies that it is sufficient, accurate, and covers the project area sufficiently to create a digital terrain model.

  • Coordinates preparations for and performance of property surveys on all private and public property which will be affected by the proposed construction project, including title work and actual field work.

  • Coordinates with Utility Companies on getting utilities marked on the ground to be included with the survey field work.

20% Office Duties:

  • Edits and revises collected field data in specially designed and developed computer software to ensure accurate and precise representation of existing topographic features and generate digital terrain models.

  • Prepares all necessary reports and forms during the course of a survey.

  • Reduces field notes and checks for accuracy in 3-dimensional coordinate transformations.

  • Reads and interprets construction plans and documents to calculate locations of structures and utilities for layout.

  • Reviews existing utility location data on surveys for accuracy.

5% Attends classes, seminars, and workshops.

  • Completes and maintains current acceptable status in all structured training programs or other training required by DOTD.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional

Work Schedule: Work hours are to be determined, Monday - Friday

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Compensation: The starting salary and Premium Pay amount for each level is shown below:

  • Engineering Technician 1 - Starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

  • Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

  • Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

  • Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked
