Definition

This is a skilled position th at is responsible for the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of all tile and resilient flooring surfaces within the school district’s buildings. The individual performs work in accordance with safety standards, and district specifications to ensure clean, durable, and safe floor conditions for students, staff, and visitors.

The employee works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor . Work is checked through personal inspection by a supervisor or approval of an administrator at the work site . Incumbent may be required to work during the evening hours for safety reasons.

License/Certification

Driver’s License

License as required in accordance with city, state and EPA ordinances

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in commercial flooring or tile installation
  • Proficiency with tile-setting tools and materials
  • Ability to read floor plans, blueprints, and layout diagrams
  • Knowledge of relevant safety and building codes

Essential Job Functions

(May not include all duties performed, not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated.)

  • Install various types of flooring including ceramic tile, porcelain, VCT (vinyl composition tile), LVT (luxury vinyl tile), and rubber flooring.

  • Remove damaged or worn flooring and prepare surfaces for new installations.

  • Perform subfloor repair and leveling as required.

  • Cut and shape tile to fit around obstacles using hand and power tools.

  • Apply adhesives and grouts, and finish joints properly.

  • Maintain clean and safe work areas during and after work.

  • Work from blueprints, drawings, or verbal instructions to layout patterns.

  • Maintain inventory of flooring materials and tools.

  • Ensure compliance with district safety and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility standards.

  • Collaborate with custodial, HVAC, electrical, and carpentry teams for integrated facility needs.

  • Respond to emergency flooring repair requests.

  • Inspecting and diagnosing floor damage (e.g. water, cracks, lifting tiles)

  • Removing asbestos-containing floor tile (if certified)

  • Replacing or patching sections of floor

  • Coordinating with outside vendors for large-scale floor replacement projects

  • Locates and reports any problem areas to director of school plant and/or risk management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

  • Good knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in an effective asbestos removal program and floor tile repair program. (if certified)
  • Ability to operate and keep an asbestos-free program. (if certified)
  • Ability to follow and maintain all asbestos safety, handling, and disposing requirements. (if certified)
  • Ability to plan work and work independently and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to work around children.
  • Good physical condition.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Work requires some lifting, walking, climbing, and standing.

Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in physically demanding environments

HAZARDS

Work involves some hazards encountered when working with asbestos containing materials.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in schools, offices, and shops and may involve working during unusual hours.
