Job Description
Job Title: Construction Superintendent
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports to: Operations Manager and Assigned Project Managers
Location: Traveling to projects nationwide. With safety officer experience, possibility of being on Connecticut-based project for the first 18 to 24 months.
Salary Range: $70,000 - $110,000 per year.
Overview
The Construction Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all on-site construction activities, ensuring projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the required quality standards. This role also includes acting as the Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO), with responsibility for promoting and enforcing company-wide safety protocols in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including USACE EM 385 standards.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Management
- Direct and supervise all phases of construction from site mobilization to project completion.
- Interpret and enforce contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and schedules.
- Coordinate and inspect subcontractor work to ensure compliance with project documents and safety standards.
- Maintain daily logs of labor, work performed, inspections, deliveries, weather, and progress with photos and narratives.
- Conduct and document daily site walks and quality control inspections.
- Facilitate coordination meetings with subcontractors and update look-ahead schedules.
- Maintain and implement Quality Control (QC) plans including the 3-phase inspection process.
- Assist in developing project schedules and ensuring timely completion of punch lists.
- Ensure all materials on-site comply with SDS/MSDS documentation and storage requirements.
Site Safety & Health Oversight
- Serve as the primary safety authority on-site, ensuring compliance with the project-specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and Corporate Safety Program.
- Conduct daily safety inspections of all work areas and operations; perform weekly formal inspections with subcontractor safety representatives.
- Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and site-specific hazard training.
- Monitor high-risk activities such as excavation, trenching, and shoring.
- Investigate and document all incidents, injuries, and near-misses, ensuring proper corrective actions.
- Coordinate with project managers, clients, and site personnel to resolve safety-related issues.
- Mentor and support field teams and subcontractors in cultivating a strong safety culture.
Qualifications
Required:
A candidate must meet at least one of the following criteria:
OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification
Plus
A minimum of five (5) years of construction industry safety experience.
OR
A minimum of three (3) years of construction industry safety experience,
and
one of the following certifications:o Certified Safety Professional (CSP) , or
o Construction Safety and Health Technician (CSHT)
o Degree in safety and health from an accredited university or college.
- Minimum of 4 years& experience in construction, including on-site supervision.
- Strong understanding of building methods, scheduling, quality control, and cost tracking.
- Experience with multi-subcontractor environments.
- Ability to interpret and apply contract documents and safety codes.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Valid driver&s license and ability to travel and remain on-site during projects.
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances for project access.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with Procore or similar construction management software.
- Experience with USACE or Army Corps of Engineers projects.
- CPR & First Aid Certification.
- USACE CQM Certification and EM 385-1-1 40-Hour Training.
Working Conditions
- Frequently exposed to construction environments including noise, moving equipment, varying weather conditions, heights, and confined spaces.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs, kneel, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to visually inspect job sites and hear construction-related audio signals (eg, alarms, whistles).
