Role Overview :
This position provides field survey support for the Design and Real Estate Sections. This position also assists with snow and ice removal operations when needed.
Location :
This position is located in INDOTs Crawfordsville District, Capital Management Department.
CDL Positions :
Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.
Salary :
This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
A Day in the Life:The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Sets up and operates equipment to obtain survey data and performs calculations fordetermination of precise measurements
- Operates higher-level survey equipment including an automatic level, total station, electronic datacollectors, robotic total stations, and GPS equipment in order to obtain survey data and calculateprecise measurements, and traversing and leveling operations (e.g., angles, distance, elevations)
- Operates a state survey van to transport equipment (e.g., automatic level, GPS equipment, totalstation, magnetic locators, and robotic total stations) to job site
- Assists the crew leader in contacting property owners to obtain permission to work on privateproperty, and in researching land titles and deeds for the location of control points
- Formulates mathematical calculations for curves, bench circuits and property or traverse lines
- Acts as a crew chief of survey crew in absence of the crew leader
- Assists in maintenance of survey instruments and vehicles
- Stocks survey truck/van with necessary supplies
- Plots field data using CADD (Computer Aided Design Drawings) software for the preparation ofsurvey drawings
- Receives training in higher-level computations involving programmable calculators and personalcomputers
- Subject to mandatory callout for snow and ice removal activities during winter operations

What You'll Need for Success:The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either
- High school graduate or equivalent
- One (1) year of experience in survey crew, or the completion of associate core program ofapplied science in surveying, civil engineering or construction technology, or six (6) months oftraining and six (6) months of experience in field survey
- Must possess a valid driver license
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment
- Considerable knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and surveying
- General knowledge in the operation of all types of survey measuring devices (e.g., global positioning satellites, digital level and total station)
- Ability to understand system of procedures
- Ability to read, copy and record figures, and the ability to gather, collate and classify data
- Ability to demonstrate physical agility
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
